Job summary

The Town of Essex is seeking a Planning Technician to join the Community Development team. This is a full-time position with excellent benefits and is open due to an internal promotion. Work hours are 8:00 a.m.

to 4:30 p.m. Monday–Friday, with potential variations based on municipality needs. The role is entry-level, serving as the first contact for visitors and callers, and supports the development review, permitting, and digital record-keeping efforts.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree preferred in a relevant discipline with some coursework in land use, architecture, historic preservation, or conservation.
• Town will consider any combination of education and experience that allows for successful performance in this role.

Responsibilities

• Greets visitors and determines the nature of their requests.
• Assists residents and property owners with completion of applications.
• Assists in processing permit and zoning compliance applications.
• Updates website content, calendars, agendas, and minutes.
• Attends evening Development Review Board (DRB) meetings as necessary.
• Provides staff support and attends the evening meetings of the Housing Commission (estimate 1 meeting per month).
