Job summary

City of Sugar Land is seeking a Planner II to conduct research, prepare reports, and act as liaison on development projects. You will review zoning cases, provide information to the public, and present findings to planning bodies. A Bachelor’s in Urban Planning is required, and a Master’s is preferred.

Two years of local planning experience, Texas driver license, and APA membership are desirable. This exempt role expects readiness during emergencies and offers comprehensive benefits and growth

Qualifications

  • Valid Texas Class “C” Driver License.
  • APA membership preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and prepare special reports and studies.
  • Act as liaison with applicants for development projects and reviews.
  • Review for compliance and advise on staff-level approvals.
  • Provide information to citizens, developers on zoning and procedures.
  • Prepare staff reports and present matters to boards and council.
  • Coordinate recommendations from other departments in reviews.
  • Be an essential employee before, during, and after emergencies.
  • Stay compliant with City policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal Planner.

What We Pay

The Planner II is an exempt position with a starting salary of $66,040 - $75,946 annually.

What You’ll Do as a Planner II:
  • Conduct research and prepare special reports and studies.
  • Act as a principal liaison with applicants of processing development projects and other applications for the Planning and Zoning Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustment, or City Council review.
  • Review for compliance and provide Development Planning’s approval of cases that typically only require staff-level approval (such as non-residential site plan packages, other similar reviews.
  • Provide information to citizens, developers and others on zoning and development applications and review procedures, regulations and policies.
  • Prepare staff reports and make public presentations of matters pending before the Zoning Board of Adjustment, Planning and Zoning Commission, and City Council.
  • Coordinate the recommendations of other departments, divisions and groups, both internal and external, in the review of development applications and special reports.
  • Required to work as an essential employee before, during and after an emergency or disaster, whether natural or acts of war.
  • Stay abreast of, and comply with, all City and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform other assignments and duties as assigned by the Principal Planner and/or their designee(s).
What You Bring
Formal Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning or related field from an accredited school or university.

A Master’s Degree in Urban Planning or related field is preferred.

Relatable Work Experience:

Two years work experience in Urban Planning at the local level, either in the public or the private sector. (Examples- Planning Internship, Planner I, or Assistant Planner)

Additional relevant work experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above knowledge; skills and education requirements may be substituted in lieu of specific education requirements.

Training (License and/or Certification):

Valid Texas Class “C” Driver License.

Membership in American Planning Association (APA) preferred.
