Job summary

Vulcan Materials Company is seeking a Pit Supervisor to oversee day-to-day operations of the aggregate plant, drive safe production, and ensure compliance with MSHA/OSHA and environmental policies. The role supports the Plant Manager in mine development, stripping and reclamation for optimum utilization at the lowest cost.

The position requires leading a team, enforcing safety, planning production, and maintaining quality control while coordinating maintenance and equipment inspections.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of supervising employees and plant operations.
  • Experience in land striping, reclamation or mining a plus.
  • Understanding of safety regulations (MSHA/OSHA) and policies.

Responsibilities

Job description

The Pit Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the aggregate plant, ensuring efficient production, and compliance with environmental regulations. The Plant Supervisor assists the Plant Manager in the management of mine development through stripping & reclamation operations to achieve optimum utilization at the lowest operating cost. This position is responsible for ensuring a safe working environment by enforcing the company’s safety policies and procedures, MSHA/OSHA and other regulations.

Essential Functions
  • Promote Safety: Take an active role prioritizing safety for yourself and others to ensure all assigned plants have zero accidents and are in total compliance with all Vulcan policies and procedures.
  • Organize and Plan Production: Plan the daily operation scheduling of plant production to ensure optimal utilization of plant and equipment, personnel and inventory requirements, and work procedures in regards to stripping, mining, processing, stockpiling, loading and shipping. Responsible for all aspects of site planning and pit development.
  • Manage Employee Relations: Provide strong leadership, training, team building and supervision to all employees at the plant in order to support the operational function of the business. Workcross-functionally with HR to recruit new employees, provide merit increases, perform disciplinary actions and evaluate the performance of employees to develop talent.
  • Monitor Processes and Materials: Analyze production and quality control to ensure a quality product is received by our customers. Monitor operational reports to ensure best practices in extraction, processing, stockpiling and re-handling to keep the product within target specifications. Implement and monitor a preventive maintenance program to limit work stoppages, downtime or other disruptions.
  • Maintain Compliance: Build a strong safety culture to ensure the plant is in compliance with Vulcan’s safety, operations and environmental policies and procedures. Manage the health and safety of employees to continuously improve the Vulcan’s health & safety performance.
  • Inspect Equipment and Perform Repairs: Assist and organize the work of employees in the daily inspection and maintenance of the plant to ensure safe, reliable and compliant operations to maximize production and minimize interruptions.

Education
  • High School Diploma required. BS/BA degree, Associate’s degree or an equivalent combination of training and work experience preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience in conducting land striping & reclamation activities.
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Construction materials industry experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge and understanding of modern principles and practices of supervising employees.
  • Knowledge and understanding of all phases of mine development to supervise the operations of land clearing, stripping and reclamation for sand & aggregate facilities.
  • Ability to be hands‑on and perform work when called upon.
  • Able to understand, interpret and apply policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of OSHA and MSHA rules and regulations.
  • Able to develop and establish performance measurements for the department; good organization and business planning skills.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and practices.
  • Able to establish practices and develop resources to meet or exceed goals and objectives.
Other Requirements
  • Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds and stand, sit and walk for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to drive a pick‑up truck on a daily basis.
  • Ability to use computerized equipment and technology.
  • Work environment will be both indoors in an office and outside in the quarry or plant. In the office the employee may occasionally be required to sit at a desk or operator’s station. In the outside setting the employee will perform activities in unprotected heights, around moving machinery, be exposed to dust, fumes and gases; may be required to use hand‑tools or power‑tools. The outside setting will expose the employee to changes in temperature/humidity and will require walking on uneven surfaces.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to work in a stressful, deadline‑oriented environment that requires complex, technical information and decision making. Must be able to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.
