Job summary

Flexicrew Technical Services is seeking a Piping Designer to execute piping layouts, 3D models, isometrics, and MTOs for heavy industrial projects. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to ensure compliance with codes, client specs, and company standards throughout the project lifecycle.

The role requires 4–8 years of piping design experience, proficiency in AutoCAD, CADWorx and Navisworks, and familiarity with ReCap or CloudWorx for point-cloud data.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform piping design and drafting activities, including 3D routing and layout of process and utility piping systems.

• Read and interpret equipment drawings from vendors and integrate them into designs.

Job description

The Piping Designer is responsible for executing piping design projects supporting heavy industrial and process facilities. This position develops detailed piping layouts, 3D models, drawings, and material take-offs while ensuring compliance with applicable codes, client specifications, and company standards.

Core Responsibilities

• Perform piping design and drafting activities, including:
• 3D routing and layout of process and utility piping systems.
• Determination and layout of pipe supports.
• Development of piping isometric drawings.
• Preparation of sketches and other drawings required for piping fabrication and installation.
• Read, interpret, and incorporate equipment drawings and technical information provided by third‑party vendors.
• Develop, quantify, organize, and maintain piping material take-offs (MTOs).
• Follow company CAD standards, client specifications, project procedures, and applicable industry codes.
• Ensure piping designs comply with project requirements, client specifications, company standards, and applicable codes.
• Perform fieldwork as required to gather existing‑condition information, verify tie‑ins, and provide construction support.
• Check and back‑check piping drawings and deliverables prepared by drafting personnel.
• Collaborate with designers and engineers within the engineering group and across other disciplines to develop complete, multidisciplinary design packages for construction.
• Coordinate with designers from other disciplines to develop and maintain an accurate, integrated 3D model that meets project requirements.
• Develop, review, and update Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) as required.
• Visualize and develop piping layouts for complex process plants and industrial facilities.
• Provide support throughout the project lifecycle, from conceptual design through detailed plant layout and piping design.

Essential Skills & Qualifications

• 4–8 years of piping design and drafting experience on heavy industrial or process plant projects.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, CADWorx, and Navisworks.
• Experience with point‑cloud software such as Autodesk ReCap or CloudWorx.
• Experience with 3D model review and clash detection is preferred.
• Strong understanding of standard piping design and drafting practices.
• Demonstrated ability to develop piping layouts from P&IDs and use P&IDs effectively in plant layout and piping design.
• Strong understanding of process and utility piping specifications, standards, and applicable codes.
• Knowledge of plant‑specific design standards and requirements.
• Ability to visualize and lay out process plants and piping systems in a 3D environment.
• Strong technical, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Strong customer‑service orientation and ability to work effectively with clients, engineers, designers, and construction personnel.
• Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Ability to manage priorities, meet project deadlines, and work overtime when necessary to support project requirements.
• Must possess a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) or be able to obtain one.
• Basic knowledge of structural steel design as it relates to equipment supports, pipe racks, and building structural framing.

Preferred Experience

• Heavy industrial and process plant design experience from conceptual development through detailed design and construction support.
• Experience coordinating piping designs with structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and other engineering disciplines.
• Experience performing field verification, tie‑in identification, and construction support.
