Job summary

General Dynamics NASSCO seeks an experienced Pipe Welder for on-site shipyard work. The role requires certifying to GTAW/SMAW procedures, producing high first-pass weld quality, and ensuring hot-work safety and WAF compliance.

You will operate in a challenging marine environment, require the ability to lift 50 lbs, work in confined spaces, and travel if needed. The position emphasizes safety, teamwork, and on-time project delivery.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of experience as a first-class pipe fitter in the ship repair industry.
• Must have all tools necessary to accomplish pipe welding, i.e., electrode holder, gloves, and weld shield.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., work aboard marine vessels, climb ladders, work in tanks and confined spaces, and wear personal protective equipment.
• Must be able to weld certify IAW Mil-Std-248 in CUNI, buttweld/socket weld; Stainless, steel, aluminum welding processes.

Responsibilities

• Certify to IAW GTAW and SMAW procedures and produce first pass yield on piping systems.
• Ensure safety tickets are up to date and comply with hot work requirements.
• Maintain a clean, safe job site and proper safety watches and PPE at all times.
• Coordinate with shop supervisor and welders to maintain quality and productivity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)

The Pipe Welders are responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safely, with the highest quality and in a professional manner. Regular, reliable on-site attendance is an essential function of this job.

POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training/Experience)

1. Minimum 5 years of experience as a first-class pipe fitter in the ship repair industry.
2. Must have all tools necessary to accomplish pipe welding, i.e., electrode holder, gloves, and weld shield.
3. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., work aboard marine vessels, climb ladders, work in tanks and confined spaces, and wear personal protective equipment.
4. Must be able to weld certify IAW Mil-Std-248 in the following metal groups:

CUNI, buttweld and socket weld
Stainless, buttweld and socket weld
Steel, buttweld and socket weld
Aluminum, buttweld and socket weld
Must have a working knowledge of pipe joint design IAW Mil-Std 22D

Visual Requirements: Must be able to pass a Standard Jaeger’s Test chart for near vision acuity reading J1 letters or equivalent with or without corrective aids and pass a color vision test using Ishihara’s Tests for Color Deficiency.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to shop supervisor. This position develops and maintains a positive working relationship with other Welders and supports a team approach in the pursuit of common company goals.

V. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• The Pipe Welder is required to certify to IAW GTAW and SMAW procedures and have the ability to produce first pass yield when welding on any piping system, regardless of the material type or joint design. The Pipe Welder is also responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safely, with the highest quality, in a professional manner.
  Assure that tank/ compartment has an updated safe for hot work ticket and that requirements of the ticket have been met. (Example: ventilation, lighting, safety equipment etc.)
  Assure that conditions of the tank/compartment have not changed since the ticket was written. (Example: fuel run back, unsafe working conditions, etc.)
  Assure that a Work Authorization Form (WAF) ticket is on the job site and that it is for the specific job being accomplished, no work will be accomplished without a WAF posted at location of repairs.
  Assure that any other safety issues are complied with that relate to the specific job being accomplished (Example: special staging, face shields for grinding, protective clothing for hot work related jobs, breathing apparatus with correct cartridges, etc.)
  Assure that Torch Safety Procedures, including testing, are utilized for all torch work.
  Assure that fire watches are assigned and maintained in the proper position.
  Assure that you are trained or qualified for the work you are assigned to do (Example: JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical / mechanical repairs and etc.)
  Assure that you and personnel working under your direction are working as safely and as productively as possible maintaining quality control at all times.
  Assure that job site is left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure.
  Assure that a 30-minute cool down period has been accomplished in hot work areas.

Vision requirements: The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as operating machines where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature. Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job. Must be willing to travel. Must be able to access all work locations, including government and private shipyards and/or vessels. Occasional weekend work and / or extended hours. Must possess or be able to promptly obtain a valid passport. May require up to 30% travel to include international.
