Job summary

Jackson Energy Authority is seeking a Pipelayer Apprentice for its Water/Wastewater division in Jackson, TN. The role supports construction and maintenance work, operating light equipment and learning to manage water and sewer infrastructure under supervision.

Ideal candidates hold a high school diploma (GED) and have some construction/maintenance exposure; on-site tasks include taps, mains, hydrants, valves, and meters with safety as a priority.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; two years of construction/maintenance experience preferred.
  • Must be able to operate and maintain heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Forklift traffic control and shoring/trenching certifications obtained within six months preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Makes wet taps on water and wastewater mains.
  • Installs water mains, hydrants, meters, and sewer components.
  • Runs new service lines for water and wastewater.
  • Maintains mains, services, and laterals, and records data using Cityworks AMS.
  • Operates a range of equipment including backhoes, pipe saws, and jetvac units.
  • Performs other duties and attends safety meetings; on-call 7 days a week.

Job description

Pipelayer Apprentice, Water/Wastewater (Jackson, TN)

Position Summary: Performs a variety of construction and maintenance duties, including operations of light equipment in the water/wastewater system.

Education/Experience: High school diploma (GED). Preference will be given to those individuals with two years of construction and/or maintenance experience.

Skills/Abilities: Good mechanical skills. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.

Certifications/Licenses: None.

Physical Demands: The ability to lift, carry, and use heavy tools and materials. The ability to climb and perform work from a ladder. The ability to safely operate a standard equipped JEA motor vehicle. The ability to safely operate specially equipped JEA construction/maintenance equipment. The ability to operate JEA field service installation equipment. The ability to orally communicate via radio and telephone. The ability to walk several miles over rough terrain. The ability to enter/exit 22" diameter accessways as well as work in confined spaces. The ability to see and read printed material.

Work Environment: Indoor/outdoor and all-weather conditions. Exposure to high voltage, the risk of gas fire/explosion, wastewater, and cave-ins. Location and work hours are determined by Management and may be adjusted as needed.

Driving: Must have and maintain a valid Tennessee class “A” license “Government Only" and tanker endorsement within six months of employment.

Telephone: Must maintain an operating telephone and furnish the number to his/her supervisor and Systems Dispatch.

Essential Functions:

  • Makes wet taps on water and wastewater mains.
  • Installs new water mains, water valves, fire hydrants, fire lines, yokes and meters, meter vaults, sewer mains, sewer manholes, valves, sewer cleanouts, sewer laterals, sewer force mains, and sewer lift stations.
  • Runs new service (water and wastewater) lines.
  • Maintains water mains, water services, sewer mains, and sewer laterals.
  • Flushes fire hydrants and uses computer-based software (Cityworks AMS) to record static pressure, residual pressure, chlorine residuals, and water usage information in accordance with flushing program.
  • Repairs active cut/broke water main and services under pressure.
  • Repairs or replaces water mains, water valves, fire hydrants, fire lines, yokes and meters, meter vaults, sewer mains, sewer main aerial ditch crossings, sewer manholes, sewer meters and valves, sewer cleanouts, sewer laterals, sewer force mains, and sewer lift stations.
  • Unstops sewer gravity mains, sewer force mains, and laterals.
  • Operates tapping machine both small and large, pipe saws, TV inspection equipment, core drills, blowers, fresh air monitors, smoke machines, hydro-static test pumps, air compressors, small and large de-watering and/or bypass pumps, air boring (piercing) tool, gas or air tamp, pavement breakers, and generators.
  • Operates backhoe, track-hoe, bulldozer, trenchers, skid loaders, front end loaders paving equipment, Jetvac combination units, easement machines, plus truck and trailer combination.
  • Assists Senior Pipelayer in SL Rat assessments to determine internal pipe score of sewer mains.
  • Assists Senior Pipelayer in performing (non-entry) level 1 Manhole inspections.
  • Assists Senior Pipelayer in collection of field measurements for as-built drawings.
  • Uses electro fusion and butt fusion methods to install PE piping.
  • Lowers and raises manholes and water valve boxes during repaving of city streets.
  • Mixes and finishes concrete.
  • Lays block and brick for meter vault installations.
  • Operates wet-vac and carpet shampooer.
  • Properly disposes of waste material.
  • Stocks/restocks truck.
  • Organizes tools and materials.
  • Cleans tools, equipment, grounds and other facilities.
  • Obtains certifications in forklift traffic control and shoring and trenching procedures.
  • Attends regular safety meetings.
  • Operates radio system.
  • Works 7 days/week on-call rotation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
