Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

Performs skilled manual work in the installation, modification, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of piping systems and associated appurtenances for steam, condensate, hot water associated with heating systems, process water, fuel oil, gas, air and process chemicals.

Essential Job Functions

Installs, maintains, cleans and repairs pipeline strainers, pressure regulating, reducing and relief valves, temperature regulating valves, temperature and pressure gauges and other appurtenances on piping systems associated with water reclamation plant process equipment.

Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains piping, coils, steam traps and controls associated with HVAC and refrigeration systems; installs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains pneumatic process control systems.

Cuts and threads pipes to specifications, using tools such as saws, cutting torches, pipe threaders and/or pipe benders; measures and marks pipes for cutting or threading.

Assembles or secures pipes, tubes, fittings or related equipment, according to specifications, by welding, brazing, cementing, soldering, or threading joints.

Selects pipe sizes, types or related materials, such as supports, hangers, or hydraulic cylinders, according to specifications.

Other Job Functions

Is responsible for the proper use, care and custody of all the tools of the trade used in performing duties.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions and in confined space environments throughout the plant facility and collection systems.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of the methods and materials necessary to install and maintain piping systems.

Considerable knowledge of pneumatic process control and HVAC systems.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.

Ability to perform oxyacetylene and electric arc welding, soldering and brazing.

Ability to interpret and work from sketches and blueprints.

Ability to perform basic math computations.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment of the trade.

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and completion of an approved apprentice training program in Pipefitting, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Substitution

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
