Job description

Stainless Steel Pipe Welder

This role requires a highly skilled TIG welder with strong experience in stainless steel process piping and 6G welding. You will perform precise open-root butt welds on stainless steel pipe across various schedules, interpret technical drawings and welding symbols, and consistently produce high-quality welds in a clean shop environment. The position demands excellent hand–eye coordination, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team on a variety of changing projects.

Responsibilities
  • Perform high-quality TIG (GTAW) welding on stainless steel pipe, including open root butt welds on Schedule 10 through Schedule 160 pipe.
  • Execute butt welding of stainless steel pipe by properly beveling pipe ends, cleaning joint areas, and utilizing GTAW (TIG) techniques to achieve 100% penetration.
  • Carry out open root butt welding on stainless steel pipe with appropriate root gaps and bevels to ensure full penetration and high-strength joints.
  • Perform 6G pipe welding on fixed pipes positioned at 45 degrees, mastering flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead weld positions within a single joint.
  • Apply back purging techniques to protect the root side of welds with inert gas, preventing oxidation, contamination, and sugaring on stainless steel and other reactive metals.
  • Set up and operate TIG torches (200 AMP or higher) and related welding equipment; when needed, utilize flux core and MIG processes for applicable tasks.
  • Interpret and work from technical drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to plan and execute accurate welds on pipe, stairs, ladders, and other fabricated structures.
  • Select appropriate welding parameters, consumables, and techniques based on pipe schedule, material thickness, and service conditions, including high-pressure applications.
  • Inspect welds visually and with basic measuring tools to verify alignment, fit-up, and weld quality, making necessary adjustments to maintain standards.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools such as squares, levels, hold pins, and tape measures are used correctly and kept in good condition.
  • Follow all welding safety protocols, including proper use of PPE, safe handling of equipment, and adherence to shop safety procedures.
  • Collaborate with team members in both shop and field settings to complete projects efficiently while meeting quality and schedule requirements.
  • Adapt to a variety of projects and tasks, including pipe welding, structural components such as stairs and ladders, and other custom fabrication work.
  • Work consistent overtime as required, maintaining productivity and quality standards during extended hours.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience as a TIG welder, specifically working with stainless steel process piping and 6G welding.
  • Proficiency in TIG (GTAW) welding on stainless steel, including thin-wall and heavy-wall pipe across multiple schedules (Schedule 10–160).
  • Demonstrated ability in 6G pipe welding, welding fixed pipes at a 45-degree angle in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
  • Strong capability in open root butt welding on stainless steel pipe, including precise joint preparation, fit-up, and full penetration welds.
  • Hands‑on experience with back purging techniques using inert gas (typically Argon) to protect the root side of welds on stainless steel and other reactive metals.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols accurately.
  • Excellent hand–eye coordination, manual dexterity, and attention to detail for precise weld control.
  • Solid understanding of the metallurgical properties of stainless steel and related alloys as they apply to welding and joint integrity.
  • Familiarity with welding safety protocols and consistent use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a welding and fabrication team.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience welding 2-inch Schedule 80 stainless steel pipe and other high-pressure piping applications.
  • Knowledge of industrial, plumbing, or high-pressure piping systems where thicker‑wall pipe such as Schedule 80 is commonly used.
  • Exposure to or proficiency with additional processes such as flux core and MIG welding when required by the project.
  • Understanding of the specific requirements and standards associated with critical, high-pressure industrial applications, such as those found in oil and gas or similar industries.
  • Ability to manage multiple types of fabrication work, including pipe welding, stairs, ladders, and other structural components.
  • Comfort working in both shop and field environments, adjusting to different project conditions and setups.
