Job summary

Upchurch is seeking a Pipe Welder to perform high-quality welding on carbon steel piping systems within commercial construction and mechanical projects. This role supports HVAC, plumbing, and process piping by executing safe, precise, and efficient welds using TIG, MIG, or Stick processes as required.

Candidates should have 3+ years of welding experience in commercial/industrial environments, be able to read welding symbols and simple drawings, and lift up to 50 lbs. OSHA 10 is preferred.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years welding experience in commercial or industrial environments.
  • Ability to produce quality welds on carbon steel with TIG, Stick, or MIG as needed.
  • Read and understand welding symbols, layout instructions, and simple isometric drawings.
  • Read and follow project specifications, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Capable of lifting 50 lbs. and working in confined spaces or elevated areas.
  • Willingness to pass weld tests; OSHA 10 preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Weld carbon steel pipe and structural components using SMAW (Stick), FCAW (Flux Core), and GMAW (MIG) as required.
  • Follow supervisors' instructions and adhere to job specifications, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain welding equipment and tools safely.
  • Assist with pipe preparation tasks including grinding, beveling, aligning, and cleaning surfaces.
  • Perform tack welding and basic fitting to support installation teams.
  • Conduct visual weld inspections, identify defects, and make adjustments.
  • Maintain safety standards, wear PPE, and participate in safety meetings/table talks.
  • Keep work areas clean and hazard-free.
  • Support pipefitters, helpers, and other field personnel when welding tasks are inactive.
  • Collaborate with foremen and project teams to ensure efficient workflow.

Position Summary

The Pipe Welder is responsible for performing high‑quality welding on carbon steel piping systems within commercial construction and mechanical projects. This role supports the installation of HVAC, plumbing, and process piping by executing safe, precise, and efficient welds using various welding processes in accordance with project specifications and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Weld carbon steel pipe and structural components using processes such as SMAW (Stick), FCAW (Flux Core), and GMAW (MIG) based on project requirements.
  • Follow instructions from supervisors and strictly adhere to job specifications, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain welding equipment and tools safely and correctly.
  • Assist with pipe preparation tasks including grinding, beveling, aligning, and cleaning weld surfaces.
  • Perform tack welding and basic fitting to support installation teams.
  • Conduct visual weld inspections, identify defects, and make any necessary adjustments.
  • Maintain full compliance with safety standards, wearing required PPE and participating in safety meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and hazard‑free.
  • Support pipefitters, helpers, and other field personnel when welding tasks are not active.
  • Collaborate with foremen and project teams to ensure efficient workflow and high‑quality installation.
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of welding experience in commercial or industrial environments.
  • Proven ability to produce quality welds on carbon steel using TIG, Stick, or MIG processes as needed.
  • Working knowledge of pipe welding fundamentals and basic structural welding.
  • Ability to read and understand basic welding symbols, layout instructions, and simple isometric drawings.
  • Physically capable of lifting 50 lbs., bending, kneeling, and working in confined spaces or elevated areas.
  • Willingness and ability to take and pass weld tests as required.
  • OSHA 10 certification preferred.
  • Prior experience supporting mechanical, HVAC, or plumbing piping systems is a plus.
  • Exposure to TIG welding on stainless steel is beneficial but not required.
  • Basic understanding of fitting, layout, or rigging techniques.
