Job summary

City of Phenix City, Utilities – Water Distribution, is seeking a full-time employee to perform field inspection, lubrication, line location, and equipment operation in outdoor settings. You will support the department by ensuring safety, locating utilities before digging, and assisting with sewer main and service line repairs.

The role requires communication with supervisors and crew, adherence to safety rules, and the ability to work as part of a team in varying weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • Education/Training: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience: Previous experience with pipes, fittings and valves.
  • Licenses: Valid Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of water design and operations.
  • Ability to read gauges and directives.
  • Written communication to document logs.
  • Verbal communication with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Mathematical skills for counting and basic calculations.
  • Operate two-way radios and follow safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in repairing pipes and installing sewer mains and service lines.
  • Operates equipment for dirt compaction and other tasks.
  • Reviews work orders to determine materials, tools and equipment needed.
  • Assists in locating lines and conferring with line locators.
  • Collects and loads tools and equipment for daily work.
  • Cleans and stores tools and equipment properly.
  • Assists with traffic control around work zones.
  • Directs traffic using devices and signals.
  • Participates in safety and departmental meetings.
  • Receives training on new equipment and procedures.
  • Maintains proper uniform and safety attire.

Work Hours: Winter: 8:00 am – 4:30 p.m. / Summer: 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. – Overtime as needed

Position Status: Full-time

Job Summary

Under general supervision visually inspects equipment to ensure proper operating condition, performs minor lubrication services; reports major malfunctions or repairs needed to supervisor; operates equipment to include tractor with rotating cutter and various hand held equipment; positions necessary safety equipment around worksite to avoid possible hazards; locates and identifies utility lines before digging or installing sewer mains; inspects worksite to ensure specifications are met and equipment has been properly installed and performs additional tasks in support of the department as needed or upon request.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. Other duties may be required, assigned and expected aside from those set forth below to address operational needs and changing operational practices.

  • Assists in performing various repairs on pipes of different sizes; installation, maintenance and repair of sewer mains and service lines
  • Operating packer to assure proper dirt compaction from repairs
  • Reviews work orders and inspects work site to determine materials, tools and equipment needed for the type of repair or installation
  • Confers with line locators on locations
  • Gather necessary tools and equipment needed for the day and assist in loading onto the trucks
  • Clean tools and equipment and ensure proper storage
  • Assists in positioning traffic control devises around work zones to conform with the manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Direct traffic around work zones using traffic control devices, hand signals and two way radios
  • Attend departmental and safety meetings as required
  • Training on the use of operation or new equipment
  • Maintain uniform and safety attire to conform to proper dress code and safety rules at all times
Qualifications

Education & Experience Guidelines
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities required for this position would be:

Education/Training
High School Diploma or GED or demonstrated of proficiency

Experience
Previous experience working with pipes to include fittings and valves

Licenses or Certifications Required
Valid Driver’s License
