Job summary

The Salvation Army in Kansas City, Kansas, is seeking a part-time music educator to work with children and adults in the corps and broader community. You will plan and teach music theory, performance skills, and related arts while developing a coherent curriculum and weekly lesson plans tailored to various ages and abilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead music and arts programs; plan weekly music lesson curriculums.
• Plan and attend recitals; coordinate corps music programs for end-of-year concerts.
• Encourage participants to develop musical abilities and self-esteem; promote positive activities.
• Assist in ensuring performances heighten community awareness of the Corps' purpose.
• Encourage participation in summer camps and music day camps; plan divisional and local camps.
• All other duties as assigned.

Job description

Job Objective:

Work with children and adults in the corps and community to plan and implement a music program whichwill include teaching theory, performance skills,music,and values.

Essential Functions:

• Work within the corpsto lead music and other arts programs as assigned. Responsible for lesson planning for music classes each week and implementing theappropriate curriculumin the program.


• Workwithcorpsleadership,planand attend all therecitals at the corpsandprepthe corpsmusic programs toparticipatein theconcert at the end of each school year.


• Encourage participants to work towards a goal and sense of accomplishment in developing musical abilities. Encourage participants to discover and develop skills and talents that will heighten their self-esteem, increase school/program pride, and involve them in positive activities.


• Assistwith ensuring the music performances and activities heighten the awareness of the purpose of the Corps in the community.


• Encourage participants to attend summer camps which will lead them to develop further talents and make spiritual decisions. Be available to help plan the participation of campers in the summer camping programs. This includes the divisional music camp as well as any summer music daycamps.


• All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:Bachelor's degree in music preferred, or extensive experience teaching music.

Experience:Aminimum of two years’ music experience working with children/adults. Performanceexperience is preferred.

Skills/Abilities:

• Demonstratedproficiencyin music theory and in a primary instrument.


• Personal knowledge of music, including performance, education, and theory.


• Strong leadership and organizational skills.


• Must be a team player,self-starter, and follow through with assignments until completion.


• A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.

Physical Requirements:

Thispositionisrequiredto do light physical workperiodicallyin order tosuccessfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employeeis regularly required touse instruments and equipment needed in a music program. Driving:

Drivingisrequired; employee mustpossessa valid driver's license from the state in which youreside.Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.

The work environment for this position includes a program environment with moderate to high noise level.
