Job summary

Qualifications

  • Completed a trig- or calc-based physics course with a laboratory section, with a grade of B or better.
  • For first semester introductory courses, completed a lab accompanying PHYS 2010/2210.
  • For second semester introductory courses, completed a lab accompanying PHYS 2020/2220.
  • May need to complete training sessions on a regular basis.
  • Interest in physics and teaching others.
  • Basic understanding of data collection, spreadsheets, and computer skills.
  • Good understanding of scientific and math concepts.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

Lab aides work with a lab instructor to supervise and help students in an introductory physics lab section. They provide technical help using equipment and computers, answer questions related to the physics concepts of the labs, and guide students in the completion of the labs. Being a lab aide can provide invaluable experience in physics, lab skills, and teaching. This is a pooled position. Applicants are selected from the pool as positions become available. After a period of time the pool will expire and applicants will be notified.

Hours & Compensation

Hours per week: No more than 9 hours per week.

Hourly Pay Rate: $15.00

Required Qualifications
  • Completed a Trig- or Calc-based physics course with a laboratory section, with a grade of B or better.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Physics experience preferred.
  • Hiring preference for those who have worked previously as Physics Department lab aides or who are knowledgeable in the care, handling, and use of physics laboratory equipment.

  • Moving about to accomplish tasks, especially for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Operate, activate, use, prepare, inspect, place, detect, or position equipment.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas; conveying detailed or important instructions accurately or quickly.
  • Receiving detailed information with or without assistance.
  • Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Physical Requirements
  • Light work. Exerting up to 20 lbs of force occasionally or up to 10 lbs of force frequently.
  • Use of arm and or leg controls exerting forces greater than sedentary work.
Visual Acuity Requirements
  • Color, depth perception, and field of vision sufficient to prepare and analyze data and figures, transcribe, use a computer terminal, and extensive reading.
Conditions

None. The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
