Job summary

Summary

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
• Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine
• Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth or the District of Columbia
• Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
• Eligible residencies: (1) Those approved by ACGME or AOA in the list published for the year of completion. (2) One year of post‑medical school training (internship or transitional-year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice under a full license in the U.S. (3) Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the U.S. with duties related to the position
• Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in accredited residency programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs)
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis; they are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged
• PRPs may perform certain restricted duties under supervision
• In rare circumstances, the Facility Director may submit a memo to the VISN Director through the VISN Chief Medical Officer for reasonable exceptions to the residency requirement if the applicant’s experience warrants it
• Proficiency in spoken and written English
• Residency in Urology preferred; Board Certified or Board Eligible preferred
• Robotic training with current robotic privileges preferred

Duties

• VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package including Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases, 50‑55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and possibly 5 days for CME), traditional federal pension, federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution, and federal health/vision/dental/life insurance.
• Licensed: One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory. CME reimbursement up to $1,000 per year if board certified and full‑time.
• Malpractice coverage: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided by VA.
• No physician employment contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.
• Urologist responsibilities: Perform all services required in the practice of urology within the VA system and maintain clinical privileges; provide electronic documentation; admit, evaluate, diagnose, treat (surgically or medically), and consult for illnesses and injuries of the reproductive and genitourinary system; obtain informed consent; evaluate patients pre‑surgery; write appropriate notes; provide inpatient and outpatient consultations and pre‑operative evaluations; participate in hospital committees, programs, and CME; work effectively with patients, families, coworkers, and other healthcare professionals; comply with Medical Staff Bylaws and information security policies; deliver care appropriate to the age, cognitive, emotional, and chronological needs of adult and/or geriatric patients; perform minor and major surgical procedures at or above national statistical levels; conduct postoperative follow‑up, patient teaching, and wound care; adhere to a 7:30‑16:00 Monday‑Friday schedule, subject to change; handle on‑call responsibilities as required.
