The medical job requires a California physician license, specialty residency completion, and city credentialing documentation. Clinical Work Across City Services

The Physician Specialist examines patients and connects clinical findings to treatment decisions. Laboratory results, radiological data, patient histories, and physical findings inform diagnoses of complex cases. The physician consults with other physicians when a case requires specialized judgment.

Pediatric, obstetrical, gynecological, and occupational-health cases each require distinct examination and treatment decisions. Preventive education and occupational injury assessment extend the appointment beyond diagnostic work.

  • Patient evaluation and diagnosis of complex cases
  • Review of laboratory and radiological findings
  • Institution of medical treatment
  • Consultation with physicians and specialized surgical support
  • Pediatric diagnosis and treatment
  • Obstetrical and gynecological care
  • Occupational-health examinations and injury assessment
  • Preventive and educational strategies
Credentials For California Practice

The appointment requires a valid California physician license issued by the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California. All allopathic physicians practicing in the state hold a California physician license before practicing medicine. The appropriate specialty residency must be completed through an ACGME- or AOA-accredited program, and board eligibility is part of the published qualification standard.

Some assignments require DEA registration. Every appointment also requires eligibility for Medicare, Medicaid, or another federal healthcare program, along with a National Provider Identifier. A completed credentialing application and supporting documentation must accompany a valid third-party billable-provider certification or a submitted billable-provider application.

San Francisco Public Health Network

The San Francisco Department of Public Health provides direct care through the San Francisco Health Network, which serves more than 125,000 insured and uninsured San Franciscans each year. The network includes Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and more than 14 primary care clinics across the city.

Department work also reaches behavioral health and population health services. Behavioral Health Services provides mental health and substance-use prevention, early intervention, and treatment. Population Health handles consumer safety, health promotion and prevention, public health emergency preparation and response, and monitoring of emerging public health issues.

Temporary And Permanent Exempt Appointments

The position is full-time, with Temporary Exempt and Permanent Exempt appointment paths. The published schedule also identifies full-time permanent, part-time permanent, and part-time-as-needed arrangements, so the department sets the working pattern for each clinical assignment.

Full-time city employment includes health plans, dental and optical coverage, paid vacation, sick leave, family leave, holidays, and other leave types. The City's employee benefits include a defined-benefit pension, deferred compensation programs, short-term and long-term disability coverage, and tuition or training reimbursement for most employees. Most full-time employees earn 13 paid sick days each year, while regular-schedule employees accrue 10 vacation days after one year, 15 after five years, and 20 after 15 years. Benefit terms vary by job class, bargaining unit, and work schedule.

The Department of Public Health combines direct patient care with population-level responsibilities. Behavioral health, population health, and health network services operate within the same public health department. Consumer safety, health promotion, emergency preparation, and monitoring of emerging public health issues add public-service duties beyond individual clinical encounters.

The recruitment ID is PEX-2230-REF4247X, and the department accepts applications continuously. The department revised the announcement on September 3, 2026, and current applicants do not need to reapply. Eliot.Watt@sfdph.org is the application contact, and 628-271-6704 is the contact phone.
