Job summary

The New Mexico VA Health Care System is seeking an Orthopedic Surgeon to join our Surgical Service team. • License: one full and unrestricted license from any US state or territory.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive orthopedic evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and surgical care for Veterans with musculoskeletal conditions and injuries.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and support resident education through academic affiliates.
• Independently exercise professional judgment in diagnosing complex orthopedic conditions and planning treatment.
• Refer patients to other providers when indicated and consult with physicians to augment care.
• Utilize hospital privileges to order tests, write prescriptions, hospitalize patients when needed, and discharge appropriately.

The New Mexico VA Health Care System is seeking an Orthopedic Surgeon to join our dynamic Surgical Service team. The selectee will provide comprehensive orthopedic evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and surgical care for Veterans with musculoskeletal conditions and injuries while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and supporting resident education through our academic affiliates.

Key Responsibilities

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME) Recruitment/Relocation: Incentive may be offered.

• Assures that a high degree of quality patient care is provided at all times.
• Independently exercises creativity in solving problems without direct supervisory guidance to meet the varying needs of patients while under care in the Orthopedic Clinic and Operating Room.
• Exercises independent professional judgment in diagnosing the full range of complex Orthopedic conditions as well as planning and executing the necessary treatment programs to meet complex and frequent changes in treatment objectives.
• Refers, when indicated, patients with multiple health problems to other providers within the facility and the VISN.
• Consults with physicians and others, when requested, to augment the care of their patients as it relates to emergent and traumatic conditions as well as Orthopedic manifestations of systemic conditions.
• Utilizes the general clinical privileges which include: ordering diagnostic tests as appropriate, writing prescriptions for medications or other items on the hospital formulary, hospitalizing patients within the VISN as appropriate and discharge patients from outpatient care if it is determined that care is no longer required.

Requirements & Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.

Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.

The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
