Summary

The Primary Care Physician serves as a practicing physician responsible for the overall management of patients enrolled for healthcare services provided by the Tennessee Valley Health Care System. They perform administrative tasks associated with clinic operations and provide leadership and direction to support staff assigned to their Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT).

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Practical English proficiency (spoken and written).
• Preferred experience: Two years of primary care.
• Physical requirements: Office-based, sedentary setting; no manual labor required beyond ordinary situations.
• Computer proficiency for electronic charting.

Duties

• Coordinates care for a panel of outpatients assigned by TVHS and evaluates and treats acute and chronic health problems in the clinic setting.
• Performs histories and physical examinations and documents findings, diagnosis, care plan, and disposition.
• Ensures patient encounters are closed appropriately with medication lists and follow‑up appointments.
• Performs office procedures within approved privileges and prescribes medications as appropriate.
• Orders and interprets routine laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic tests, communicates results, and initiates or expedites consultations and special tests.
• Provides patient and family education, orders immunizations, and delivers preventive or screening services.
• Screens patients to determine the need for hospitalization and performs Basic Life Support as necessary.
• Transmits clinical findings to other providers via the Computerized Patient Record System.
• Manages nurse practitioners and physician assistants and oversees precepting of residents as assigned by TVHS.
• Treats patients 18 years of age or greater with courtesy, tact and respect toward veterans, representatives, visitors, and VA staff.
• Protects customer data privacy, handles conflicts, and follows the Privacy Act, VA statutes, and policies.
• Utilizes data sets from the VHA Almanac, Compass, EQM, and High‑Risk Registries to identify and manage high‑risk patients.
• Tracks care components electronically and maximizes the use of virtual care modalities such as Home Telemedicine, VA Video Connect, telephone visits, secure messaging, and e‑consults.
• Complies with the Medical Center Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations of the Medical Staff.
• Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
