Job description

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
  • Education: Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the coursework was completed.
  • License: Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training:
    • Approved residency training in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification, or
    • One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S., or
    • Non‑U.S. residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. performing duties related to the position.
  • PRP (Physician Resident Provider) eligibility: Residents in accredited programs who meet the basic requirements may be appointed as PRPs. PRPs must have a full license and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis, with a defined scope of practice under supervision.
  • English language proficiency: Spoken and written English.
  • Preferred experience: Fellowship or residency training in cardiac or thoracic surgery; demonstrated proficiency in complex cardiovascular and thoracic procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair/replacement, aortic surgery, lung resection, and minimally invasive thoracic interventions.
  • Experience collaborating in multidisciplinary teams to deliver perioperative care, optimize outcomes, and advance evidence‑based protocols for veteran populations.
  • Track record in managing acute and chronic cardiothoracic conditions in diverse patient populations, including veterans with multimorbidity.
  • Commitment to surgical education through mentorship and participation in quality improvement and clinical research within the VA healthcare system.
  • Physical requirements: Ability to lift 45 pounds; whole‑body movements including pulling, pushing, bending, climbing, and walking for specified durations. Vision and hearing standards as outlined in VA Handbook and VASTHCS policy.
Duties
  • Provide comprehensive cardiovascular and thoracic surgery care for patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Perform patient evaluations, histories, and physical examinations; order diagnostic studies and procedures in compliance with national guidelines.
  • Write medical orders and prescriptions; document care in the computerized patient record system.
  • Obtain consent and document procedures performed.
  • Provide education and counseling to patients, families, and staff regarding treatments and medications.
  • Review and update policies and scope of practice standards to meet VA and North Texas VA mandates.
  • Supervise residents, fellows, and medical students in clinical and operative settings.
  • Participate in recruitment, relocation incentives, and education debt reduction program activities.
