Key Responsibilities

The Radiation Oncologist at the Orlando VA Healthcare System is responsible for the evaluation and treatment of patients requiring radiotherapy. The duties include, but are not limited to: Conducting medical histories, physical examinations, diagnostic evaluations, and treatment planning. Ability to comprehensively assess patients presenting with cancer and related diseases.

Providing advanced radiation therapy to patients, including planning and delivery of radiation treatment. Ability to make informed decisions regarding patient care and develop individualized treatment plans. Working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals. Participating in the call rotation with other radiation oncologists.

Utilizing tele-medicine services to provide care to patients at Community Based Outpatient Clinics. Advising and counseling patients and their families regarding the implications of treatment, potential side effects, and prognosis. Ordering and interpreting appropriate imaging studies and laboratory tests to guide treatment. Providing ongoing outpatient and inpatient care for a diverse patient population.

Prescribing and managing medications related to cancer treatment within the defined scope of practice. Offering education and support to patients, families, and healthcare team members.

Requirements & Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.

Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.

The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
