Job summary

CoreCivic is seeking a physician to provide comprehensive primary care to incarcerated individuals within a correctional facility. This role emphasizes high-quality clinical care, preventive services, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team in a medical home model.

The physician will perform evaluations, manage chronic diseases, respond to emergencies, document care, and stay current with correctional medicine regulations while mentoring staff and supporting patient-centered outcomes.

Qualifications

• Medical degree from an accredited institution.
• Current and unrestricted medical license in the practicing state.
• Experience in primary care, preferably correctional medicine or underserved populations.
• DEA registration and ability to prescribe controlled substances.

Responsibilities

• Conduct medical evaluations, physical examinations, and histories for incarcerated individuals.
• Diagnose and treat a wide range of illnesses and injuries, manage preventive care.
• Develop and implement individualized treatment plans and prescribe medications.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests and provide vaccinations and screenings.
• Monitor chronic diseases and coordinate with specialty care when needed.
• Respond to medical emergencies within the facility and coordinate transfers when required.
• Maintain accurate medical records in compliance with confidentiality regulations.
• Collaborate with nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, dentists, social workers, and other staff.
• Provide training and education to correctional staff on primary healthcare topics.

The Primary Care Physician is responsible for providing comprehensive primary healthcare services to incarcerated individuals within a correctional facility. This includes diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses, managing preventive care, and coordinating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services within a medical home model.

The successful applicant should be able to perform ALL of the following functions at a pace and level of performance consistent with the actual job performance requirements.

Primary Healthcare Services

• Conduct thorough medical evaluations, physical examinations, and medical histories for incarcerated individuals
• Diagnose and treat a wide range of acute and chronic illnesses, injuries, and infections.
• Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, prescribing appropriate medications, therapies, and interventions.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as pharmaceuticals, laboratory work, radiological examinations, and screenings. Provide vaccinations, perform health screenings, and promote preventive care measures within the correctional population.
• Basic technical skills such as suturing, splinting and injections.

Chronic Disease Management

• Monitor and manage chronic diseases prevalent among incarcerated individuals, such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, HIV/AIDS, and Hepatitis C.
• Ensure proper medication management, including prescribing, adjusting dosages, and monitoring treatment effectiveness.
• Educate patients on disease management strategies, lifestyle modifications, and medication adherence.
• Collaborate with specialty care providers for consultations and referrals, when necessary.

Emergency Medical Services

• Respond to medical emergencies within the correctional facility, providing immediate assessment, stabilization, and necessary interventions.
• Coordinate with emergency medical services or arrange for transfers to external medical facilities, when required.
• Participate in emergency preparedness planning and training exercises to ensure efficient emergency response within the correctional setting.

Collaboration And Coordination

• Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, dentists, social workers, and other correctional staff, to ensure coordinated and integrated healthcare delivery.
• Communicate effectively with healthcare team members, providing necessary information, consultations, and referrals.
• Participate in case conferences, team meetings, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance the overall healthcare delivery system.

Documentation And Compliance

• Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, including patient histories, diagnoses, treatments, and medications administered.
• Adhere to patient confidentiality regulations and ensure the security and privacy of medical records.
• Comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and policies governing correctional healthcare and professional ethical standards.

Professional Development

• Stay updated with the latest advancements in primary care, correctional medicine, and relevant healthcare regulations.
• Engage in continuous professional development activities.
• Provide training and education to correctional staff on primary healthcare topics, as needed.

Qualifications

• Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.
• Current and unrestricted medical license to practice medicine in the state/jurisdiction where the correctional facility is located and DEA
• Valid state identification.
• Experience in primary care, preferably with experience in correctional medicine or working with underserved populations.
• Strong diagnostic and clinical skills, with the ability to manage a diverse range of acute and chronic medical conditions.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a challenging and dynamic environment.
