Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a qualified physician to provide comprehensive medical care to Veterans at the Myrtle Beach VA outpatient clinic. This role includes performing medical examinations, developing treatment plans, and participating in patient education.

Summary

Open continuous announcement, remains open until September 30, 2026. Initial cut‑off for referral of eligible applications and subsequent cut‑off dates are on the 1st of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as‑needed basis until positions are filled.

Qualifications

• Basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement.
• Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
• Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy).
• Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
• Degree must have been obtained from an approved VA school for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Approved residencies include ACGME or AOA accredited programs for the year of completion.
• OR one year of post‑medical‑school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post‑training independent practice in the United States.
• OR non‑U.S. residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States performing duties related to the position (U.S. fellowships would be creditable).
• Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency programs and who otherwise meet basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis, are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged.
• PRPs have a limited scope of practice allowing certain restricted duties under supervision.
• In rare and unusual circumstances, the Facility Director may submit a memo to the VISN Director through the VISN Chief Medical Officer to request reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement for physicians whose record warrants such action.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Preferred experience: Veterans Affairs primary care and board‑certified.

Duties

• Primary, specialty, mental health, dermatology, gynecology, vision care, podiatry, and other services offered at the Myrtle Beach VA outpatient clinic.
• On‑site parking available; work with Disabled American Veterans and county Veterans Affairs to provide transportation for Veterans and authorized caregivers.
• Provide medical care to Veterans (not treating patients in a generic sense).
• VHA Physician Total Rewards included: recruitment incentive (sign‑on bonus) authorized for highly qualified candidates, education debt reduction program (EDRP) eligible for the position, salary, performance bonus, regular salary increases.
• EDRP: Submit application within four months of appointment; award amount up to $200,000 over one to five years; former participants ineligible.
• Paid time off: 50‑55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, up to 5 days paid absence for CME).
• Retirement: Traditional federal pension with 5‑year vesting, federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution.
• Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care; many programs carry into retirement.
• Licensure requirement: one full and unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory.

• Primary care responsibilities: performs and records history and physical examinations, records clinic visit data, develops diagnoses and manages primary care panel, enters progress notes, completes workload documentation timely.
• Provides comprehensive medical care for acute and chronic conditions, preventive care, diagnostic tests, medications, labs, timely follow‑up, patient inquiries, secure messaging.
• Develops treatment plans per accepted protocols, prescribes medications per approved formulary and federal/state law.
• Patient education on conditions, treatments, nutritional counseling, smoking cessation, immunizations, health screening, disease management, preventive measures.
• Consults other specialties as appropriate based on service agreements.
• Care of female patients may be required; may serve as Women’s Health Designated Provider on an ad‑hoc basis.
• Work schedule: Monday‑Friday 8:00 AM‑4:30 PM; subject to change based on agency needs.
