Job description

Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist – Kelsey‑Seybold Clinic, Optum

We are looking for an experienced Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist to join our multidisciplinary team. The ideal candidate has solid skills in surgical pathology, cytology, and frozen section diagnostics, and experience in clinical pathology, including peripheral smear review and CLIA regulatory compliance.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Perform routine sign‑out, providing high‑quality diagnoses of surgical pathology and cytology specimens using a range of microscopy techniques, including light microscopy, special stains, immunohistochemical stains, and other techniques.
  • Consult with referring physicians on test ordering, interpretation, and treatment recommendations.
  • Provide diagnostic information to treating/referring physicians in written pathology reports.
  • Maintain compliance with departmental key performance indicators such as turnaround time and peer review metrics.
  • Perform frozen sections on a rotating basis.
  • Perform rapid on‑site assessment (ROSE) of in‑office fine‑needle aspirations as needed.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment conferences.
  • Be available on site during normal working hours to assist peers, administration, and staff with laboratory or pathology‑related questions.
  • Participate in proficiency testing programs and intradepartmental meetings to establish measures that ensure and improve accuracy of diagnoses and quality of care.
  • Engage in professional organizations, continuing medical education conferences, and seminars to stay current with developments in pathology.
  • Perform gross examination, dissection, and description of specimens according to procedure.
  • Provide oversight, assistance, and education of laboratory personnel in specimen processing.
  • Take photographs of specimens when indicated for patient reports or archival purposes.
  • Consult with peers or external departmental consultants on difficult cases as requested or needed.
  • Adhere to HIPAA requirements as they pertain to protected health information (PHI).
  • Perform on‑call responsibilities as needed.
  • Complete annual training programs within the required timeframe and regularly attend staff meetings.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Comply with all state, federal, and professional regulations, as well as company and departmental policies and procedural manuals.
  • Adhere to CAP, CLIA, state regulations, HIPAA, safety, and OSHA regulations.
  • Possibly be responsible for CLIA laboratory directorships of one or more clinical laboratories.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Comply with American Board of Pathology requirements for maintenance of certification and annual continuing medical education requirements for state licensure.
  • Maintain appropriate medical staff membership and privileges at applicable medical facilities.
Required Qualifications
  • Medical Degree (MD or DO).
  • Accredited residency training.
  • Licensed or willing to be licensed in the State of Texas.
  • Board certified or board eligible.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with referring providers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies.
  • Demonstrated initiative, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to establish priorities and coordinate work activities.
  • Ability to work independently and make reliable recommendations and diagnoses in patient care.
  • Driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualification
  • Fluency in Spanish (bilingual).
Compensation & Benefits

The specialty compensation range is $307,500–$528,000, including base pay and bonus; it is based on several factors such as local labor markets and experience, and may increase over time based on productivity and performance. Benefits include a comprehensive package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase, and a 401(k) contribution (subject to eligibility). All compensation and benefits comply with applicable wage laws.
