Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed in the announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Physicians currently employed by the VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

  • United States Citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
  • Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs in the year the study was completed.
  • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification. Accepted pathways include:
    • Residency approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
    • One year of approved post‑medical‑school training (first year of residency or transitional year) followed by two years of independent practice.
    • Non‑U.S. residency followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the United States.
  • Residents currently enrolled in accredited programs and otherwise meeting requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Additional requirement: board certification in anatomic and clinical pathology.
Duties
  • Perform surgical pathology gross, microscopic, and final diagnosis, and code surgical pathology reports in rotation with other pathologists.
  • Handle biopsies and complex resection cases from a diverse range of specialties, including GI, pancreatobiliary, genitourinary/renal, lung, and ENT.
  • Provide intraoperative consultation to surgical services.
  • Perform rapid onsite evaluation for CT‑guided and US‑guided fine‑needle aspiration biopsies.
  • Provide diagnoses on gynecologic and non‑gynecologic cytology specimens.
  • Participate in prospective and retrospective peer review of cases.
  • Review and interpret serum and urine protein electrophoresis, peripheral blood smears, and body fluids.
  • Oversee a laboratory section, provide clinical consultation services, and oversee QA/QI of the department.
  • Participate in hospital and departmental committees and conferences as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with federal statutes, VA directives and policies, CAP accreditation standards, and New Employee Orientation standards.
  • Supervise pathology trainees in surgical and clinical pathology.
  • Teach rotating medical students, pathology residents, clinical fellows, and laboratory technical staff.
  • Consult with medical center and laboratory staff on test utilization, technical issues, and result interpretation.
  • Work Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
