Summary

The Physician Facility Pain Management - Opioid Safety - and Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Coordinator is assigned to the Physical Medicine and Rehab Service at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia. The PMOP Coordinator supports the Facility Pain POC/Clinical Leads in coordinating pain management, opioid safety, and prescription drug monitoring program initiatives and ensuring implementation of VHA and Joint Commission standards.

Qualifications

• U.S. citizenship; non‑citizens only if no qualified citizens can be recruited under VA policy.
• A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a VA‑approved school.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Completed residency in a core specialty approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs leading to board‑certification eligibility (ACGME/DOA). Alternative pathways include: (1) one year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice; (2) a minimum of three years of independent practice after non‑U.S. residency training.
• Resident physicians in accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers under limited circumstances.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Preferred: at least 3 years clinical experience as a Pain Medicine Specialist after an ACGME‑accredited pain fellowship.
• Preferred: at least 3 years in a multidisciplinary pain clinic setting.
• Board certification in Addiction Medicine or related certifications, and/or experience with buprenorphine and medication‑assisted treatment for opioid use disorder.
• Physical ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods and to lift light items.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate the implementation of VHA and Joint Commission standards related to pain management, opioid safety, and prescription drug monitoring.
• Serve on the Interdisciplinary Pain Care Committee as the PACT representative.
• Act as the Pain and Opioid Safety subject‑matter expert during PACT case presentations and staff meetings.
• Compile and provide pain resources for the VISN, site, and community to assist PACT pain care management.
• Work closely with primary care, pain specialty, and facility leadership to facilitate roadmap implementation.
• Assist with initial patient evaluation for acute and chronic pain conditions, including follow‑up care, consultation with other services, and ensuring safety and quality.
• Act as the liaison to PACT for information on national initiatives and tools such as Stepped Care for Opioid Use Disorder, Train the Trainer initiatives, and CARA mandates.
