Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Martinsburg VA Medical Center in West Virginia seeks an Otolaryngology physician privileged to provide medical and surgical care.

The role is based in the Surgical Service, General Surgery/ ENT Section, overseeing both inpatient and outpatient care.

Qualifications

• U.S. citizenship as required for VA positions.
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent in allopathic/osteopathic medicine.
• Degree from LCME-accredited or AOAc Accredited school.
• ECFMG eligibility for non-US grads as applicable.
• Current full and unrestricted medical license in the U.S.
• Residency training approved by ACGME or AOA with eligibility for board.
• Proficiency in English (speaking/writing).
• Board-eligible or board-certified preferred.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate, diagnose, admit, treat and manage diseases of ears, nose, throat, head and neck.
• Provide non-operative and operative care within clinical privileges.
• Perform inpatient and outpatient ENT consultations and follow-up care.
• Provide emergency and on-call ENT services as assigned.
• Order and interpret diagnostic studies and implement treatment plans.
• Educate and mentor medical students, residents and staff.
• Maintain licensure, board certification, credentialing and CME as required.
• Work schedule: Mon–Fri, 08:00–16:30.

Summary

This position serves as a Physician privileged to provide medical and surgical care in Otolaryngology located within the Surgical Service department at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
• Education: Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine
• The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed
• Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted - or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted
• For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above - facility officials must confirm that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated
• Licensure: Physicians must possess a current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state - territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
• Residency Training: Physicians must have successfully completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs - in an accredited core specialty training program (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) leading to eligibility for board certification - OR Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) leading to eligibility for board certification - OR One year of post medical school training (internship - first year of residency - or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post-training independent practice (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the United States - or OR Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the United States (performing under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties related to the position they are applying for (United States fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the Physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
• English Language Proficiency: Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7402(d) and 7407(d)

• Physical Requirements: The incumbent should be physically and mentally capable to perform the examinations - formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan
• Physical activity includes sitting - standing (up to 4 hours) - walking (up to 2 hours) - heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) - reaching above the shoulder - and repeated bending - the incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable

Duties

• Duties include but are not limited to: Evaluate - diagnose - admit - treat and manage patients with diseases - disorders - and injuries of the ear - nose - throat - head - and neck - including conditions involving the ears - facial skeleton - upper respiratory tract - and upper alimentary system
• Provide non-operative and operative care consistent with approved clinical privileges and within the capability and resources of a Level 1C facility
• Perform inpatient and outpatient consultations and follow‑up care for patients referred by other clinical services and affiliated outpatient clinic
• Provide emergency and on‑call otolaryngology services as assigned and consistent with granted privileges
• Order - interpret - and act upon diagnostic studies and implemented treatment plans consistent with VHA standards of care
• Educates and mentors medical students - interns - residents - technicians - and other physicians
• Participates in surgical staff briefings and contributes to continuous learning within the service
• Participate in interdisciplinary care coordination and collaboration with other services to ensure continuity of care
• Maintain current licensure - board certification (if applicable) - credentialing - privileging - and completion of all required mandatory education and training
• Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 08:00am- 4:30pm
