Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

• Meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
• Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from an approved school.
• Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or D.C.
• Residency training: Physicians must have completed an approved residency program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Optional: One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship/first year of residency or transitional year) followed by two years of independent practice.
• Optional: Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S.
• Residents in ACGME/AOA programs who meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent basis. PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and are not independent practitioners; they have a scoped practice under supervision.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Additional Requirement: American Board Certification in Orthopedic Surgery.
• Preferred Experience: Accredited fellowship training in joint arthroplasty (upper extremity training preferred).
• Demonstrate excellence in clinical care, teaching, and academic productivity.
• Credentials suitable for appointment at HMS or BU at the Instructor–Assistant Professor–or Associate Professor level.

• Physical Standards: Must meet physical requirements for the position, including a pre‑placement physical examination, random testing for illegal drug use, lifting 15–44 pounds, pushing (approx 2 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walking and standing 3–5 hours and kneeling, rapid mental and muscular coordination, depth perception, and basic color discrimination. Hearing aids are permitted.

Duties

• The Department of Surgery/Orthopedics at the VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHCS) – affiliated with Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH)/Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Boston University (BU) – is seeking a full‑time Orthopedic Surgeon.
• Candidates must have completed accredited training in joint arthroplasty; additional training in shoulder and upper extremity surgery is advantageous.
• Candidates should demonstrate strong clinical and academic performance and an interest in resident and fellow education.
• Major duties include providing comprehensive orthopedic surgical care with emphasis on joint arthroplasty.
• Perform operative and non‑operative management, including evaluation, surgery, and follow‑up.
• Participate in education of residents and fellows.
• Contribute to interdisciplinary teamwork and quality improvement efforts.
• Engage in academic activity, including teaching and scholarly work.
