Summary

This position is located at the Royal C Johnson VA Health Care System in Sioux Falls - South Dakota. This is an open continuous announcement until June 30 - 2026. Qualified applicants will be considered and referred as vacancies become available.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
• Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine
• The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
• Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
• OR One year of post‑medical school training (internship or first year of residency or transitional year) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post‑training independent practice under a full and unrestricted license in the United States
• OR Non‑US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States presenting duties related to the position (US fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement)
• PRPs and exceptions for residents in accredited training programs who meet basic requirements
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis
• PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a scope of practice allowing limited duties under supervision
• Additional exception arrangements may be approved by the Facility Director in coordination with the VISN Director for exceptional cases

• The VA Sioux Falls Healthcare System is recruiting a part‑time Orthopedic Surgeon to serve as the General Surgeon aligned with the Surgery/Specialty Care Service in inpatient and outpatient settings at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center.
• Duties include diagnosing and treating common orthopedic surgical conditions, both surgically and non‑surgically.
• Participate in a call schedule after hours, with the ability to respond promptly to emergent situations.
• Responsible for seeing patients in consultation in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Provide care of Veterans' medical needs through examination, surgical consultation, and developing treatment and follow‑up plans.
• Educate patients and families throughout the course of treatment.
• Adhere to policies and procedures for required orders, operation notes, discharge summaries, progress notes, clinical reminders, and performance measures in a timely fashion.
• Deliver effective care while meeting and exceeding compliance standards, including the Joint Commission and VA Central Office performance measures.
• Mentor, train, and supervise residents and mid‑level providers in all aspects of their duties; perform other directly related duties as required.

• This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program, with award amounts up to $200,000 and eligibility periods of one to five years, subject to VHA policy and application within four months of appointment.
• Pay: Competitive salary with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases.
