Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. This is an open continuous announcement; applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies become available. Duties

The Section Chief of Neurology will oversee the clinical, educational, and administrative operations of the Neurology Section at the Ralph Johnson VA Medical Center, ensuring the delivery of high-quality neurological care to veteran patients. This role includes supervising and mentoring MUSC neurology residents and fellows rotating through the VA, fostering their clinical training and professional development in alignment with both VA and MUSC program standards. The Section Chief will also collaborate with VA leadership and MUSC faculty to develop section policies, manage staffing and resources, and maintain compliance with VA regulations and accreditation requirements.

1. Performs and records history and physical examinations and records data from clinic visits.
2. Evaluates, consults, develops diagnosis, and manages the Veteran.
3. Enter progress notes in computerized medical record and completes workload documentation in a timely manner.
4. Provides medical care encompassing acute and chronic medical conditions and all appropriate preventive care for both male and female veterans.
5. Orders diagnostic tests, medications, laboratory tests as medically relevant for each patient.
6. Provides timely follow-up on results and patient inquiries, including and not limited to completion of view alerts, secure messages and other patient communications.
7. Determines medical assessment and develops treatment plans according to accepted protocols.
8. Prescribes medications according to approved formulary, and in accordance with Federal and State Law.
9. Educates patients concerning medical conditions and recommended treatments. (Specific topics include but are not limited to nutritional counseling, need for smoking cessation, periodic immunizations and health screening tests, acute and chronic disease management and other preventive health measures).
10. Consults other specialties as appropriate, according to service agreements.
11. As chief/assistant chief, will supervise other employees within the section and perform duties including performance appraisals, proficiencies, and other supervisory functions.

Work Schedule

Part‑time: Monday‑Friday; between the hours of 8:00 am‑4:30 pm (subject to change based on applicant/agency needs).

Requirements

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from an approved institution.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the ACGME or AOA, in the list published for the year the residency, or fellowship if applicable, was completed; OR
• (2) One year of post‑medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post‑training independent practice under a full and unrestricted license; OR
• (3) Non‑US residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States.
• Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in accredited residency programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed intermittently. Rare circumstances may allow for exceptional residency training requirements.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands of this position involve primarily walking, sitting, talking, driving, and use of the telephone. Light lifting under 15 pounds. Hearing (aid permitted).

Education

1. Schools of medicine accredited by the LCME for the year in which the degree was granted.
2. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the COCA for the year in which the degree was granted.
3. For foreign medical graduates not covered above, confirmation that the medical school meets ECFMG eligibility requirement for year graduated.

Note: Appointment under 38 U.S.C. § 7405 may be approved for physicians not covered above for non‑patient‑care roles in exceptional circumstances.
