Job summary

The Indian Health Service is seeking compassionate physicians dedicated to improving the health of American Indian and Alaska Native people. In this role, you will deliver expert medical care and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to enhance health outcomes.

Compensation

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide expert, patient‑centered medical care including evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute, chronic, and preventive health needs within specialty.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure safe, effective, and coordinated care, review conflicting medical evidence to reach final conclusions.
  • Perform specialty‑specific diagnostic, therapeutic, and/or surgical procedures consistent with training and credentialing, including adjudicating complex disability claims.
  • Contribute to teaching, mentorship, and professional development of medical staff, students, and trainees.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical innovation initiatives to advance healthcare delivery.
Requirements & Conditions of Employment
  • Probationary period may apply.
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Compliance with Public Law 101‑630 regarding contact or control over Indian children.
  • Possession of and maintenance of medical staff clinical privileges and required licensure.
  • Possible on‑call hours or standby duty.
  • Successful completion of federal background investigation.
  • Required immunizations: Measles, Rubella, and seasonal influenza unless exemption granted.
  • E‑Verify employment verification required.
  • Direct deposit set‑up required.
  • Background investigation must be completed within five calendar days of receipt of instructions.
Basic Qualifications
  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (or equivalent) from a U.S. or Canadian school accredited by recognized bodies; foreign medical school graduates must be equivalently accredited.
  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted state or territorial license or registration as a physician.
  • At least one year of supervised graduate training (internship, residency, or fellowship) in a recognized program.
Minimum Qualifications by GS Level
  • GS‑13: 3 years of graduate training in specialty or equivalent.
  • GS‑14: 4 years of graduate training in specialty or equivalent.
  • GS‑15: 5 years of graduate training in specialty or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Board certification in specialty (preferred but not required).
  • Experience with psychiatry, surgery, or other specialty areas may require completed residency training.
