Martinsburg VAMC provides general medical, surgical, and psychiatric services to veterans in 23 counties in West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The Medical Center has a fully integrated inpatient and outpatient primary care program, and provides a full range of outpatient services.

Duties

The Martinsburg VAMC is seeking a full time physician who is board certified in Internal Medicine with subspecialty certification in Critical Care to help provide 24/7 coverage in the MICU, including nights, weekends and holidays. Coverage of an outpatient clinic in addition to the MICU is dependent on the practitioner's subspecialty training and board certification/eligibility. Candidates must possess committment to patient care, teaching, performance improvement and take an active role in a very active Medicine Service. Candidate must possess excellent clinical and technical skills.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must meet all regulatory requirements for Physician per VA Handbook 5005, Part II, and Appendix G2, dated April 15, 2002 as listed below:

Basic Requirements

Citizenship:

Citizen of the United States.

Education

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

• 1 Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
• 2 Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
• 3 Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
• 4 For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1.

Licensure and Registration

• Physicians (Except Residents). Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country.
• Residents. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia before the second year of VA residency, or meet any licensure, registration or other equivalent requirements established for residents of non-VA hospitals with which the VA facility is affiliated for training purposes. The resident must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure

Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The work requires some physical exertion including periods of walking, standing, regular and recurring bending, stooping, lifting heavy objects such as assisting patients on and off examination tables.

English Language Proficiency

Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

Preferred Qualifications

Board Certification in Internal Medicine with Critical Care certification.
