Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert geriatric assessment and management for inpatient consults.
  • Collaborate with Medicine, Trauma & Orthopedics, ICU and subspecialty services on complex cases.
  • Engage in teaching of residents, fellows and medical students.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to improve patient outcomes.

Clinical Faculty: Geriatrics Inpatient Consults in Academic Hospital Medicine at Banner University Medical Center Phoenix!

We are seeking a highly skilled and academic-minded Consultant Geriatrician to expand our inpatient consultation services. This role is pivotal in integrating specialized geriatric care across the hospitals most complex clinical pathways, ensuring that our older adult population receives age-sensitive, evidence-based interventions.

The successful candidate will act as a key collaborator with diverse multidisciplinary teams, bridging the gap between acute specialized care and the unique physiological and psychosocial needs of older adults.

In addition to this roles clinical effort, one potential 0.25 FTE leadership opportunity is available to explore: Associate Program Director for Quality Improvement, Patient Safety, and Scholarly Activity. This is a key educational leader within the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clinical Consultation: Provide expert geriatric assessment and management recommendations for patients under the care of:
  • Medicine Teams: Managing multi-morbidity and polypharmacy.
  • Trauma & Orthopedics: Co-management of fragility fractures and perioperative optimization.
  • ICU/Critical Care: Addressing delirium prevention and end-of-life transitions.
  • Sub-specialty Services: Collaborative care for Heart Failure and Advanced Cardiology patients.
  • Academic Leadership: Serve as a core member of the Faculty, with a dedicated focus on:
  • Teaching: Mentoring residents, fellows, and medical students in geriatric principles.
  • Research: Engaging in or leading scholarly activity and clinical research.
  • Quality Improvement (QI): Designing and implementing protocols to reduce hospital-acquired complications (e.g., falls, pressure ulcers, delirium).
Candidate Qualifications
  • Board Certification: Dual or single Board Certification in Geriatric Medicine or Palliative Medicine.
  • Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of post-fellowship experience within an Academic Medical Center.
  • Academic Track Record: Proven commitment to scholarly output, including peer-reviewed publications or significant contributions to medical education.
  • Interdisciplinary Skills: Exceptional communication skills with the ability to influence and lead within a "team-of-teams" environment.
