DEPARTMENT SUMMARY

St. Charles Health System GI Hospitalist providers address the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of hospitalized patients who have been referred from the community primary care doctors, emergency room doctors, or other physicians in the hospital for GI tract diagnosis.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The GHI Hospitalist assesses and manages patients following established standards and practices. Gastroenterology is responsible for providing medical, surgical, and postoperative management of the GI tract. Gastroenterologists will work with providers in other specialties to provide patients specialized GI support.

Work schedule: Shifts are generally 24 hours in duration with 10-12 hours in house and then on call back. Shifts will vary with 7 on 7 off or 14 on 14 off, with a maximum of 148 annual shifts. Call expectation: Night Back-up call is required.

Provider Practice Location: St. Charles Bend Hospital (2500 NE Neff Rd, Bend, OR)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
Role Expectations
  • Examines, diagnoses, and provides a broad scope of surgical treatments including endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasounds, colonoscopies, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, sigmoidoscopy, capsule endoscopy and double baloo enterostomy feeding tube insertion.
  • May perform emergency procedures including endotracheal tube intubation, tube thoracotomy, pericardiocentesis, ultrasonographic evaluation, and peritoneal lavage.
  • Performs patient examinations, obtains and records pertinent medical history, subjective, and objective findings.
  • Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Interprets and integrates data to determine diagnosis, and therapeutic plan.
  • Administers and prescribes medications in compliance with state law and practice guidelines.
  • Orders and performs appropriate medical and surgical procedures in accordance with State law and practice guidelines.
  • Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatments.
  • Educates patients regarding health, illness prevention, and healing.
  • Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
  • Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, documenting clearly and concisely.
  • Triages patient telephone calls, providing consultation as needed.
  • Communicates effectively with colleagues, patients, physicians, and administration.
  • Maintains quality of clinical practice by selecting appropriate avenues for professional growth.
  • May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.
Administrative Expectations
  • Documents all patient care within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes all necessary tasks in compliance with health system policies and regulatory agencies to ensure timely and accurate billing.
  • Remains cognizant of SCHS organizational structures.
  • Participates in provider meetings and assists in policy formation for SCHS and provider’s practice.
  • Maintains current clinical knowledge and skills through regular CME activity.
  • Attests to having adequate (CME) to meet maintenance of board certification and compliance with MSO rules and continuing privileges without restriction.
  • Maintains current, unrestricted licensure and appropriate certifications to maintain privileges at a St. Charles Health System hospital sufficient to permit performance of job duties.
  • Maintains active privileges at a St. Charles Health System hospital sufficient to permit performance of job duties.
  • Maintains personal credentials to include licensure, DEA registration, Board certification and additional requirements or other credentials as required by the bylaws of St. Charles.
  • Remains current on best practices in the specialty through a personal program of specialty specific CME.
  • Consistently demonstrates effective communication, negotiation, change-management and conflict resolution skills.
  • Maintains a positive and optimistic attitude in the performance of duties.
  • Maintains an active role in the site medical staff by participating in their regular meetings.

EDUCATION

Required: Graduation from an accredited medical school. Successful completion of an accredited residency program in Gastroenterology. Successful completion of additional educational programs necessary to enable Physician to acquire and maintain privileges to perform the range of services contemplated. This includes board eligibility/certification in the specialty being practiced. Complete annual fire/safety, etc. education in-services as required. Attend mandatory educational offerings as described in SCHS policies/procedures and/or as required by other regulatory bodies. Complete annual CME as required to maintain license and appropriate Board certification. Complete in a timely manner assigned Computer Based Learning modules. Preferred: N/A

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

Required: Current license as MD / DO. Board certified or eligible in Physician’s chosen specialty. Those applicants who are not board certified at the time of application but who have completed their residency or fellowship training are required to become board certified within seven years of residency or fellowship training. Unrestricted Federal DEA number. Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid, or other federal or state governmental health care programs. Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet SCHS driving requirements. ACLS. Additional certifications may be required based on privileges granted to provider by Medical Staff Services at SCHS locations. Preferred: Oregon license. Federal DEA Number registered in Oregon.

EXPERIENCE

Required: Experience in hospital practice environments providing care in a hospital setting. Experience using EMR (Electronic Medical Records) software. Preferred: Prior experience in the successful completion of process improvement work and standard work development
