Job summary

The Millington VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Millington, TN seeks a full-time Endocrinology Physician to join its Specialty Care service. You will provide state-of-the-art endocrine care to veterans, supervise fellows and residents, and participate in clinical education.

You will share on-call duties, lead the Endocrine team, and contribute to research, quality improvement, and program development while serving a diverse patient population in a federally run healthcare system.

Qualifications

• Must possess an MD or DO degree and be licensed to practice in the United States.
• Board certification in Endocrinology & Diabetes and Metabolism; board cert in Internal Medicine required.
• Proficiency in English; VA eligibility criteria apply; EDRP eligibility may apply.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical endocrine care for inpatients and outpatients.
• Supervise and teach endocrinology fellows, residents, and medical students.
• Share attending call responsibilities with other endocrinologists as needed.

Summary

The Millington VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic - Millington - TN is recruiting for a Endocrinology Physician to serve as a full-time Specialty Care physician. The position is accountable to the Chief of Specialty Care - for assuring the most effective delivery of state-of-the-art care by meeting or exceeding compliance standards.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine
• The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
• Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
• (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education - the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) - in the list published for the year the residency - or fellowship if applicable - was completed
• OR (2) One year of post medical school training (internship - first year of residency - or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post-training independent practice (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the United States
• OR (3) Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States (performing under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties related to the position they are applying for (United States fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the Physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
• Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis
• PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
• rather - they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
• Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
• In rare and unusual circumstances - the Facility Director can submit a memo to the VISN Director through the VISN Chief Medical Officer - who may approve requests for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement for Physicians whose composite record of experience - accomplishments - performance - and qualifications warrant such action
• Proficiency in spoken and written English
• Additional Requirement: Board Eligibility/Certification in Endocrinology Diabetes and Metabolism Board Certified in Internal Medicine Have/maintain current certification in BLS/CPR

Duties

• General duties include - but are not limited to: Clinical practice - supervising and teaching Endocrine fellows - residents and medical students
• Providing consultation on various forms of endocrine disease states - both for diagnosis and treatment in the inpatient and outpatient settings
• Expected to share attending call responsibilities with other Endocrinologists in covering some nights - weekends and holiday calls as needed
• The physician will round with the team of fellow(s) - resident(s) - and medical student(s) as regards to inpatient settings
• Lead and manage the Endocrine team consisting of Endocrine fellows - residents - medical students - Pharmacists - Mid-Level Providers - etc
• while on inpatient service or in clinical setting
• The Endocrine/Diabetes Physician (MD/DO) is administratively responsible to the Chief of Medicine
• Clinical oversight is provided by the collaborating physician - Section Chief - Endocrinology
• The physician - as a member of the department - communicates with other healthcare providers to manage consults and additional services as required
• Recognizing patients appropriate for referral or consultation with the collaborating physician
• Consultations with collaborating physicians may occur through personal - telephone - or electronic media contact
• Clinical activities may include - but are not limited to - clinical assessment and evaluation - Inpatients and Outpatients
• Health care management of assigned veteran patients with acute and chronic illnesses
• Ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic studies
• Ordering consultation and referrals - Inpatients and Outpatients
• Patient follow-up - as appropriate
• Health promotion and disease prevention
• Patient - family - and staff education and counseling
• Clinical research (must have separate research approval)
• Administrative activities - including performance improvement activities - research - and non-clinical tasks as assigned
• Exhibits leadership in initializing changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from research and studies
• Stays informed on developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education
• Any other duties as assigned by the supervising physician or his/her designee as it relates to scope of practice
