Job summary

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking two Hospitalists for inpatient care in the Muskogee, OK VA facility.

Responsibilities include admitting inpatients (including ICU), conducting histories and physicals, rounding, discharge planning, and coordinating with specialists to ensure continuous high-quality care. The incumbent will also provide inpatient internal medicine consultations, supervise residents/students, and participate in teaching and quality initiatives within the Medicine

Qualifications

• MD or DO degree from an school approved by VA
• Current full/unrestricted medical license in the US
• Residency training in an approved core specialty leading to board eligibility
• Possession of English proficiency (spoken and written)
• Board certification in Internal or Family Medicine preferred

Responsibilities

• Admit and manage inpatients including those in the ICU with general adult medical illnesses
• Provide inpatient internal medicine consultations to other services
• Coordinate discharge planning and complete discharge summaries timely
• Supervise residents, fellows, medical students, and NP/PA students as assigned
• Participate in teaching, quality improvement, and compliance with policies and guidelines

Summary

The Muskogee OK VA is currently recruiting for 2 Hospitalist to provide inpatient intermittent care within the Emergency Medicine Service line. **The salary announced in this vacancy is for a full time employee. Incumbent salary will be based on actual hours worked.**

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine
• The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
• Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
• (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education - the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) - in the list published for the year the residency - or fellowship if applicable - was completed
• OR (2) One year of post medical school training (internship - first year of residency - or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post-training independent practice (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the United States
• OR (3) Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States (performing under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties related to the position they are applying for (United States fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the Physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
• Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis
• PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
• rather - they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
• Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
• In rare and unusual circumstances - the Facility Director can submit a memo to the VISN Director through the VISN Chief Medical Officer - who may approve requests for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement for Physicians whose composite record of experience - accomplishments - performance - and qualifications warrant such action
• Proficiency in spoken and written English

Duties

• This includes admitting patients and performing histories and physical examinations
• rounding on patients and writing progress notes
• discharge planning and timely completion of discharge summaries
• Works closely with specialists and primary care Physicians to ensure that inpatients receive continuous high-quality care
• Coordinates the transfer of patients with other hospitals if necessary
• Provides inpatient internal medicine consultations to other services - including but not limited to - Mental Health - Rehab - and Surgery
• Participates in quality assurance programs and chart reviews
• Communicates with incoming and off going Hospitalists to ensure continuity of care
• Attends Medical Service staff meetings and meeting of the Medical/Dental staff whenever scheduling allows
• Serves on Medical Staff committees
• Completes all medical records (including discharge summaries) in accordance with Bylaws - Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff
• Ability to participate in the teaching of medical residents and students
• Ability to perform minor bedside procedures (Central venous access / paracentesis / thoracentesis / vent management) - preferred
• Ensure discharge summaries are completed timely
• Ideally - the discharge summary will be completed prior to patient being discharged from facility
• Documentation of care in the medical record in keeping with the bylaws of the Medical Center
• Provide supervisory oversight residents - fellows - medical students - NP/PA students - as appropriate - who are assigned to the Medicine Inpatient/ER Service
• Provide supervisory oversight of the clinical care on the Medicine Inpatient/ER service and ambulatory clinic of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants as appropriate
• Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care
• Ensures that the practice of medicine is consistent with Joint Commission - CARF - VA policies and procedures - clinical practice guidelines - VISN standards - national statutes and regulations - medical record documentation - mandatory continuing education - and HIPPA policies
• Academic/Teaching/Training Involved in performance improvement and quality assurance initiatives
• Provides leadership guidance and consultation to staff
• Is involved in the supervision and teaching of residents and other trainees assigned to service as appropriate
• Serves as a consultant to other medical center staff and trainees and assist in implementation of treatment plan as appropriate regarding their patients
• Is responsible for timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation required by the Medical Center or healthcare system - as appropriate
• Plans and oversees the completion of personal research programs that might further the educational and mission goals of the VA healthcare system
• Other Significant Responsibilities Serve on Medical Center - VISN and/or National VA committees or task forces
• Represent the Medicine Inpatient/ER Service on hospital committees as directed by the Chief of Medicine Inpatient/ER - Chief of Staff and Medical Center Director
• Maintain CME and re-licensure as dictated by Veterans Administration - State - and the American Board of Internal Medicine rules and regulations
