The Minneapolis VA Health Care System (MVAHCS) is seeking a Full-Time Emergency Room Physician to join the Specialty Care Service Line at the MVAMC in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Key Responsibilities

Emergency Department - Perform appropriate medical screening exam on all patients checked-in to be seen in the ED using assessment skills to examine patients thoroughly using appropriate clinical, laboratory, and other pertinent data. Provide continuity of care by performing patient hand-off when transferring care of a patient to another physician. Initiate appropriate and timely treatment.

Recognizes changes in behavior, symptoms, signs, and other pertinent facts about a patient and has the knowledge to modify, in real time, the plan of treatment. Should be cognizant of capabilities and limitations of the ED and of oneself. 1. Evaluation, stabilization and movement to definitive care of acute medical, surgical, and trauma conditions that present to the ED. 2.

Assessment and initiation of treatment of ongoing or chronic conditions that present to the ED while facilitating delivery of the patient to the appropriate level of follow up care. 3. Provide patient first focused care while practicing evidence based cost effective medicine. 4.

Ensure practice consistent with Joint Commission, CARF, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice emergency medicine guidelines, VISN standards, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and HIPPA policies 5. Education of any students of medicine and residents within the teaching facility. 6.

Participation in facility and university conferences, committees, administrative duties, and research to ensure continuous quality improvement in patient care and medical advances 7. Provide tele-emergency care for veteran patients 8. Provide in person physician coverage to VISN 23 emergency departments in the event of acute physician staffing crisis that would result in emergency department closure or similar degree of operational impairment.

24/7 shift work scheduling which encompasses proportional day, evening, night shifts and holidays as dictated by the published accepted emergency department operating procedures Participation in emergency call schedule (day/night) Participation in the academic and training mission of the facility and department. Participation in education and administrative tasks as required by the department.

Requirements & Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.

Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.

The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
