Job Summary

The role of an Emergency Physician involves providing acute care and emergency medical services within the hospital. The physician is responsible for assessing patient condition, performing physical examinations, stabilizing patients, and coordinating referrals, as well as maintaining accurate clinical documentation.

Responsibilities
  • Assess a patient’s condition to determine severity.
  • Obtain patient history and elicit details of ailments.
  • Perform physical examinations to diagnose and treat patients.
  • Stabilize or attend to patient’s basic needs and refer, admit, or transfer as necessary.
  • Make a preliminary diagnosis quickly with minimal information and initiate treatment.
  • Interact effectively with diverse cultural backgrounds, personality types, and age groups.
  • Accurately complete T‑sheets and related paperwork as a legal record and for other healthcare professionals.
  • Promote health education to patients and families.
  • Liaise with other medical and non‑medical staff to ensure quality treatment and teamwork.
Working Conditions
  • Sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves intermittently during working hours.
  • Subject to frequent interruptions.
  • Engages with patients, residents, staff, government agencies, and the general public under all conditions.
  • Handles hostile and emotionally upset patients and family members.
  • Communicates with medical staff and other hospital departments.
  • Participates in continuing training programs relevant to the position.
  • Possibly exposed to infectious waste and diseases.
  • Subject to lifting, carrying, and supporting patients.
  • Constantly alert for patient safety.
Requirements
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak clearly, and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant timely action.
  • Must be able to deal tactfully with staff, patients, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the general public.
  • Must possess the willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non‑professional personnel.
  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day.
  • Must cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must possess adequate sight and hearing or use of prosthetics to meet job requirements.
  • Must function independently, possess flexibility, personal integrity, and ability to work effectively with the CEO, physicians, department managers, and the general public.
  • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation of patients.
Education and Experience
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine.
  • ACLS certified.
  • Experience with LMR preferred.
  • Three years of emergency room experience preferred.
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health records preferred.
Location and Schedule

Onsite: 1 Hospital Road, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, Inc. Weekly hours: 0 (per diem). Work shift: rotating.
