Summary

Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center is a tertiary care teaching hospital located in historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina, serving more than 75,000 veterans along the South Carolina and Georgia coasts. The 152‑bed facility includes outpatient clinics, a nursing home, women's health services, and a full range of inpatient and outpatient care.

Qualifications

• U.S. citizenship or a qualified visa status when no citizen applicants are available.
• Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion.
• Active, full, and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification, or equivalent experience as outlined in the detailed residency requirements.
• Board‑certified status (or equivalent) if required for academic or faculty roles.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Physical fitness to walk, sit, talk, drive, and use the telephone; able to handle light lifting and walking, and withstand stress and exposure to patients with psychiatric and physical illness.

Duties

• Provide comprehensive interventional cardiac care, performing a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic coronary and structural procedures in a state‑of‑the‑art cardiac catheterization laboratory.
• Serve as a clinical educator and mentor to MUSC general and interventional cardiology fellows, contributing to didactic teaching, procedural training, and development of cardiovascular specialists.
• Perform history and physical examinations, develop diagnoses, and manage veteran care according to accepted protocols.
• Enter progress notes and complete workload documentation in the computerized medical record promptly.
• Order diagnostic tests, medications, and laboratory studies as medically relevant; provide timely follow‑up on results and patient inquiries.
• Prescribe medications in compliance with the approved formulary and federal and state law.
• Educate patients on medical conditions, treatments, preventive care, and health maintenance topics.
• Consult other specialties as appropriate in accordance with service agreements.
• Work schedule: Part‑time; Monday–Friday, either 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (negotiable based on applicant and patient needs).
