Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval details, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements specified in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Existing VA physicians who met the initial appointment requirements under previous standards are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  • Citizenship: The VHA encourages eligible non-citizens to apply. Non-citizens may be appointed if qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or equivalent from an approved medical school.
  • Licensure: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S. or its territories.
  • Residency Training: Completed residency approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Residency must be accredited by ACGME, AOA, or deemed equivalent with appropriate professional exposure.
  • Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Experience: Qualified to perform duties as a physician, having completed an accredited residency or possessing equivalent experience.

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to perform physical tasks including reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and moving patients and equipment as described.
Duties
  • Provide consultative services for cardiology referrals in outpatient settings, managing conditions such as heart failure, chest pain, coronary artery disease, and others.
  • Interpret diagnostic tests including echocardiograms, EKGs, ambulatory monitors, and stress tests, applying relevant guidelines.
  • Collaborate with cardiology PA-Cs, participate in fellowship activities, attend meetings, and serve on committees.
  • Perform chart reviews and other duties as assigned by the Chief of Medicine at Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center.
  • This position offers incentives including a sign-on bonus, student loan repayment up to $200,000, relocation assistance, comprehensive benefits, and a work schedule from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm. Call duties are on a rotating basis, including weekends and home-call with on-site availability.
