RWJBarnabas Health in Rahway, NJ seeks a Physician Assistant (PT, Days) to support the ICU Physician Rahway team. The role involves providing high-acuity care in a multidisciplinary ICU, performing physical exams, ordering studies, and collaborating with intensivists and hospitalists to deliver best-practice patient care.

The position requires a licensed PA with critical care experience, readiness to work rotating days, weekends and holidays, and participation in ongoing education and quality

Qualifications

• Graduate of an AMA accredited PA program and licensed by the NJ Board of Medical Examiners.
• Recommended high acuity/adult critical care experience.
• ENLS certification within 90 days of hire; FCCS certification within 1 year of hire.

Responsibilities

• Obtain and record patient history; perform exams and establish treatment plans.
• Order and schedule labs, imaging and consultations; prescribe interventions as appropriate.
• Manage ICU consults and coordinate with critical care team to ensure best-practice care.
• Instruct and counsel patients regarding health, and ensure timely charting and documentation.
• Support patient flow and participate in department meetings and CME/CEU requirements.

Job Summary

The Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) plays a vital role within the critical care team

Their primary responsibility is to manage high-acuity adult patients in a multidisciplinary critical care setting

The ICU team provides comprehensive critical care in collaboration with various consulting specialists

Patients may be transferred from other floors or hospitals or admitted directly from the Emergency Department (ED) or the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

They may present with a range of conditions, including diabetic ketoacidosis, stroke, renal failure, respiratory failure, sepsis, gastrointestinal bleeding, oncologic/hematologic emergencies, electrolyte imbalances, hypertensive emergencies, ENT, neurological, and intra-abdominal surgeries

The APP works closely with critical care intensivists, ICU hospitalists, residents, fellows, and fellow APPs to provide direct patient care in the ICU

APP responsibilities include performing physical exams, collecting and documenting data, performing approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering and scheduling laboratory studies and consultations, and prescribing appropriate interventions and medications

Additionally, the APP may manage ICU consults in collaboration with attending physicians

The APP's role in critical care is to oversee and ensure that patients receive best-practice care

Position is for rotating days, weekends and holidays

Essential Functions

Obtains and records patient history, Performs physical and medical screening examinations, Completes diagnostic and therapeutic studies, Orders diagnostic laboratory tests, radiological studies or other therapies as appropriate, Establishes diagnostic decision-making and initiates a treatment plan, which may include ordering medications, additional therapeutic modalities, etc

Coordinates patient care with other members of the health care team

Initiates consultation requests to other health professionals to provide more comprehensive patient management

Instructs and counsels patients regarding mental and physical health, referring patients to appropriate specialists/resources

Completes charting in a thorough and timely manner

Adequately manages patient flow in the ICU

Performs procedures as allowed by state law and under the direction of the supervising or collaborating physician

Works within legal, regulatory, and ethical practice standards

Actively participates in department staff meetings and risk management education

Completes required courses, i,e, HIPAA, EMTALA and other CME/CEU requirements

Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to academic lectures and / or quality improvement projects

Requirements
