Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Summary:
Physician Assistant
With the supervision of a Physician, (as per O.R.C. 4730) the PA-C provides medical care, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions to patients with complex, acute, and chronic health conditions. This medical care may be in a variety of clinical settings. Assesses health status by obtaining relevant health and medical history. Performs a physical exam based upon the age and patient history as per the Supervisory Agreement in place with OSMB. Must be able to work with autonomy within Ohio law under direction of supervising physician. Identifies significant health and medical risk factors. Orders, interprets and evaluates laboratory test and other diagnostic studies to assess patient's clinical problems and health care needs. Develops a diagnosis by analyzing and synthesizing collected data. Develops a treatment plan along with the patient and significant others as directed and reviewed by physician. Performs diagnostic or therapeutic interventions consistent with certification, law and Akron Children's Hospital privileges. May prescribe and monitor medications as allowed by prescriptive authority through Ohio Board of Medicine and hospital policy. Develops patient education plan. Collaborates with nursing, medical and other healthcare team members regularly to ensure quality patient care. May serve as clinical preceptor for PA students.

Outpatient Practice emphasizes health promotion, disease prevention and the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic health problems. Participates in quality monitoring through the review of records and treatment plans for patient outcomes on a bi-annual basis to assure quality care and per ORC requirements. This review is completed via the Focused Professional Performance Evaluation (FPPE) and Ongoing Professional Performance Evaluation (OPPE) for Advanced Practice Providers as part of Joint Commission requirements.

Position Overview:

The pediatric hematology/oncology Physician Assistant (PA) (Outpatient) provides comprehensive care to pediatric patients with hematologic and oncologic conditions. Working in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, the PA will manage patient treatment plans, oversee chemotherapy and other therapies, monitor for complications, and provide supportive care. The PA is responsible for patient and family education, ensuring continuity of care between clinic visits, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives. This role focuses on delivering compassionate, evidence-based care in a family-centered outpatient setting.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform detailed patient histories and physical examinations for pediatric patients with hematologic and oncologic conditions. Assess patient symptoms, disease progression, and overall health status. Identify signs of disease recurrence, treatment-related complications, or new health concerns requiring medical intervention.
• Develop individualized treatment plans based on diagnosis, patient needs, and family preferences in collaboration with hematology/oncology physicians. Adjust plans as necessary based on patient response to treatments.
• Order, interpret, and follow up on diagnostic tests to assess treatment progress or new issues. Prescribe, manage, and adjust chemotherapy regimens, targeted therapies, and other pharmacologic treatments. Monitor patients for adverse reactions and intervene appropriately.
• Address supportive care needs, such as pain management, nausea control, infection prevention, and transfusion therapy. Diagnose and manage complications such as febrile neutropenia, bleeding, electrolyte imbalances, thrombosis, and organ dysfunctions related to cancer treatment.
• Provide care for patients undergoing clinical trials by closely monitoring side effects, collecting data, and following trial protocols. Assist with identifying and enrolling eligible patients in clinical trials. Provide care according to trial protocols, including collecting data, monitoring patient progress, and reporting findings.
• Educate families on signs of treatment-related complications and what to expect during different stages of care, including remission or palliative care options. Offer emotional support and counseling for patients and families coping with difficult diagnoses or challenging treatment courses.
• Work with interdisciplinary teams to provide compassionate care, ensuring patient comfort, family support, and seamless home resources. Partner with pediatric specialists to deliver holistic, comprehensive care. Communicate with inpatient teams, when patients transition from outpatient to inpatient care, to ensure continuity and consistency in treatment.
• Coordinate outpatient treatment schedules for chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and other interventions, ensuring timely care and minimizing disruption to the patient's life.
• Monitor patients between visits via follow-up phone calls or telehealth to assess for side Develop survivorship care plans that include monitoring for late effects of treatment and ensuring psychosocial well-being post-treatment.
• Assist in planning palliative care, supporting families through discussions on quality of life, and addressing symptom management for patients with terminal diagnoses.
• Provide survivorship education, outlining necessary follow-up care, including monitoring for recurrence, late effects of treatment, and preventive care for secondary cancers or other complications.
• Mentor and train nursing staff, students, and other PA/APRNs in pediatric oncology best practices.

Education, Licensure & Certification:

• Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
• Board certification through the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
• Current unrestricted Ohio license as a Physician Assistant
• Must obtain/maintain adequate continuing education hours per board requirements.
• Current healthcare provider BLS training is required. PALS and ACLS may also be required.
• Must obtain credentialing as an active member of medical staff and appropriate medical staff privileges.
• DEA for prescriptive authority required.
