Advanced Practice Provider – Orthopedic Oncology

UAB Medicine is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join the Orthopedics Oncology Team. The APP will be part of a specialized team dedicated to caring for patients with primary bone and soft tissue tumors, metastatic bone disease, and complex musculoskeletal conditions. This role offers a unique blend of inpatient consults and outpatient clinic responsibilities, allowing you to build meaningful relationships with patients while participating in every stage of their care. The position provides the ability to evaluate patients, develop treatment plans, coordinate surgical care, and provide ongoing follow-up. Work Schedule: Full‑time, benefited
Shift: 8‑hr day shifts, Monday‑Friday, 8am‑5pm
No weekends, holidays, or call

CME Allowance: Full‑time benefited APPs receive an annual $2,000.00 CME allowance. This can be used for recertification, applicable fees, CME courses, etc. that occur after a new employee's start date.

Position Summary

To provide medical care and treatment within the established scope of practice to medical services patients as assigned by and under the direction of the collaborating physician (Section 610‑X‑5 of the Alabama Board of Nursing Administrative Code). The collaborating physician shall be available for direct communication for consultation and referral or arrange for the same medical coverage by a physician who is pre‑approved by the State Board of Medical Examiners in the same manner as the collaborating physician of record. To coordinate plan of care, discharge, and specialty referrals as appropriate to meet the age‑specific needs of the patient, to plan and coordinate health care education for patient, family, and other health care providers as needed, to perform comprehensive physical examinations and assessments, to interpret, analyze and evaluate patient’s medical records and social data, to perform and/or assist the physician with procedures per collaborative agreement, and to coordinate and participate in performance improvement activities.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Based on thorough physical and psychosocial patient assessments, formulate and implement comprehensive patient care plans focused on surgical interventions, including patient and family education, prescriptions, additional lab and diagnostic testing, and therapies.
  • Ensure complete documentation of patient assessments, patient care plans, and care provided.
  • Order and interpret laboratory and other diagnostic tests for the patient.
  • Maintain records and reports as required by regulatory agencies and The Joint Commission (TJC); may coordinate and/or participate in performance and quality improvement activities.
  • Assist in the coordination of research protocols, serving as a patient advocate and a liaison between the patient and other health care providers.
  • Provide assistance in orientation and/or training of new clinical personnel as needed, conducting workshops, in‑service training, and distributing appropriate materials for patients and staff.
  • Serve as the expert clinical resource to clinical staff and patients in the area of specialty.
  • Provide a safe environment for patients and others.
  • Demonstrate a responsible attitude toward continued professional growth.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
