Job summary

Baylor Scott & White Health is seeking a PA Surgical Specialty‑Operative to provide direct patient care, hold prescriptive authority, and be credentialed and billed as an independent provider by Medicare and Medicaid. The advanced practice provider offers medical care across General Surgery, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology and other surgical specialties, with clinic focus and occasional OR First Assist duties, in Texas.

Schedule is Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Qualifications

• Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in Texas; NCCPA certification; Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire or transfer.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient condition through comprehensive or problem-focused exams and histories.
• Order, collect, interpret labs and diagnostic tests.
• Prescribe medications and manage therapies with safe, cost-conscious care.
• Develop and implement patient treatment plans in collaboration with physicians.
• Counsel patients and families on medical processes, medications, and health promotion.
• Maintain accurate medical records and coordinate referrals when needed.
• Provide consultative services related to the specialty.
• Manage patients in various care settings including inpatient and emergency.
• Perform invasive procedures within scope and supervision.
• Conduct perioperative care pre- and post-operatively and participate in rounds.

Job Summary

The PA Surgical Specialty‑Operative is a licensed, certified healthcare provider who provides direct patient care, has prescriptive authority, and is credentialed, privileged, and billed as an independent provider by Medicare and Medicaid. The advanced practice provider offers medical care based on the supervising physician’s scope of practice. Surgical providers care for adult and pediatric patients and specialize in General Surgery, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Cosmetic, Vascular, Trauma, Transplant, Urology, Plastics, or other surgical specialties.

Essential Functions of the Role

• Assess the physical and mental condition of patients by performing comprehensive or problem‑focused physical examinations and medical histories.
• Order, collect, interpret, and evaluate laboratory and other diagnostic tests to assess patient problems and health care needs.
• Prescribe, recommend, or use medical drug therapies or related treatments. Perform procedures following approved policies, focusing on efficacy, safety, and cost. Recommend interventions to change behavior linked to health risks.
• Formulate and implement comprehensive patient treatment plans based on assessments, evidence‑based medicine, and standards of care. Collaborate with physicians and team members when appropriate. Evaluate patient’s response to health care and the effectiveness of care.
• Counsel patients and families about medical processes, illness management, medication, nutrition, and health promotion. Counsel patients on drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with food supplements, over‑the‑counter medications, and herbal remedies.
• Maintain appropriate records detailing the patient’s treatment plans and outcomes. Initiate timely consultation and referral when the problem exceeds scope of practice or expertise.
• Provide consultation level services for conditions/problems related to the provider’s specialty, level of experience and training.
• Manage patients in a healthcare setting(s) other than the primary clinic setting (e.g., inpatient, emergency services, surgical, procedural, etc.).
• Perform invasive procedures specific to scope of practice and provider’s level of expertise as delegated by supervising physician.
• Perform follow‑ups with patients both pre‑ and post‑operatively. May also round on patients in the hospital or see patients in the Emergency Department.
• Participate in all phases of perioperative patient management including outpatient, inpatient, and operating room settings.
• May be required to perform patient care duties beyond the regular schedule based on coverage needs of the department.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire or transfer.
• Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA).

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mostly in clinic with some OR First Assist duties. 22–24 patients per day. Outpatient/First assist.

Qualifications

• Education: Graduate of an accredited program.
• Experience: Less than 1 year of experience.
• Certification/Licensure/Registration: Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in Texas; Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire or transfer; Current certification by the NCCPA.
