Basic Function and Responsibility

Assist Gastroenterology faculty in direct patient care for adult Gastroenterology patients across outpatient clinics and infusion services at our Urbandale, Iowa location. The PA-C provides diagnostic, therapeutic, and coordination services under faculty supervision while exercising appropriate autonomy within the PA–physician collaborative relationship.

Outpatient Clinics

• New patients assigned to the outpatient clinics: prepare a complete, detailed and accurate initial patient history and perform a complete physical exam of selected patients in the outpatient clinic.
• Present the history and physical exam to the GI faculty and participate in potential re-examination of the patient.
• Develop a diagnostic and therapeutic management plan under faculty supervision.
• Order and follow up on laboratory tests, X-rays, GI procedures, and ultrasound procedures.
• Coordinate and triage emergency add-on patients.

Patients assigned to a PA subspecialty

• Develop and manage a “return” patient clinic for patients at high risk of developing GI malignancy.
• Develop and carry out a plan for surveillance of patients with pre‑malignant conditions of the digestive tract, including Barrett’s metaplasia and colonic adenomas. This includes performing an appropriate interval history and physical examination, facilitating the surveillance procedure, following up and reporting the results, arranging repeat examinations at appropriate intervals, and developing a patient registry and database.

Diagnostic And Therapeutic Unit – Procedure Unit

• May be asked to assist with supporting procedure suite operation in the future as needed.

Infusion Services (Urbandale, Iowa)

• Support daily operational workflow and quality initiatives within the Infusion Suite.
• Provide direct patient care for infusion therapies, including biologic and monoclonal antibody infusions.
• Collaborate with prescribing providers to develop, implement, and oversee infusion and Beacon care plans.
• Act as liaison between the Infusion Suite, providers, nursing staff, and patients.
• Assist with prior authorization appeals and infusion‑related clinical documentation.
• Provide education and serve as a resource for infusion nursing staff.

Qualifications

• Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners, including graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
• Previous experience with gastroenterology is highly desirable.
