Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements as per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amount is up to $200,000 and eligibility period ranges from one to five years, as determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Candidates pending completion of training or license requirements may be considered but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA physicians who met the previous qualification standards at the time of initial appointment are considered to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
• Degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a US state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Approved residencies: (1) Programs approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in the year the residency or fellowship was completed.
• OR (2) One year of post‑medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice under a full and unrestricted license in the United States.
• OR (3) Non‑US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States, performing duties related to the position and meeting the licensing requirements.
• Exceptions: Residents in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent basis and must hold a full license.
• PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged.
• PRPs have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
• In rare circumstances, the Facility Director may submit a memo to the VISN Director via the VISN Chief Medical Officer for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement.

• Physical requirements: Ability to perform rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, lift patients, perform all pain procedures including interventional pain procedures, pain patient history and physical exams, acute/inpatient pain services, hearing (aid permitted), and emotional/mental stability.

Duties

• Practice responsibilities: Evaluate pain patients in outpatient and inpatient settings; perform interventional pain procedures including epidurals, radiofrequency ablations, joint injections, sympathetic blocks, neurolytic blocks, spinal cord stimulator therapy, intrathecal pump therapy, and others; manage acute, inpatient, and cancer pain, including consultation and regional anesthesia techniques; provide general anesthesia services on an as‑needed basis; provide outpatient and inpatient pain services at the Atlanta VA Health System; screen pain consultations; participate in clinical teaching of medical students, residents, fellows, and other providers; flexible work schedule with on‑call responsibilities.
