About the Division of Critical Care Medicine

The Division of Critical Care Medicine has a regional and national reputation for excellence in clinical care, research, and education. The division currently includes 25 Critical Care Medicine physician faculty, three physician hospitalists, one PhD statistician, four (soon to be six) PICU advanced practice providers, and two neurocritical care advanced practice providers, with plans to expand the faculty. There are 47 PICU beds and one resuscitation room, with 14 additional beds anticipated to open in the fall of 2026. We care for approximately 3500 critically ill or injured children in our busy PICU. Our clinical practice includes ECMO, CRRT and other extracorporeal therapies; trauma and burn patients; renal and stem cell transplant patients; and a wide variety of children with critical illnesses from around the region, the country and the world. There is a separate Cardiac ICU that is staffed by a separate Division of Cardiac Critical Care. An Intensivist-run Sedation program was recently launched, and we also provide staffing for critically ill children at the NIH’s clinical center. Faculty members have been successful in obtaining NIH funding, including active R01 and K awards. Our research is supported by a team of research nurses/coordinators. There are 17 Critical Care Medicine fellows, emanating from the top pediatrics training programs.
