Job summary

Hope College's Physical Plant department is seeking a qualified Plumber to perform maintenance, repair and installation across campus facilities. You will read drawings, evaluate plumbing systems and coordinate with technicians and outside contractors, ensuring work meets codes and safety standards.

The ideal candidate holds a Michigan Journeyman or Master Plumber license, has 3–5 years in maintenance plumbing, and may have backflow testing certification or be willing to obtain it.

Qualifications

  • Backflow prevention testing certification or willingness to obtain.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and critique plumbing design documents for new and existing buildings and systems.
  • Oversee and manage college technicians and outside contractors on projects.
  • Perform maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, alterations on fixtures and systems.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, specs and operating instructions.
  • Respond to emergency after-hours calls as needed.
  • Maintain required licenses and attend trainings.

Job Description

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Ability to evaluate and critique plumbing design documents fornew and existing buildings and systems.
  • Ability to oversee and manage other college technicians andoutside contractors on projects.
  • Mechanical aptitude, knowledge of working with hand and powertools.
  • Perform maintenance service, repair, troubleshooting,alterations and other associated work on multiple types of fixturesand systems.
  • Ability to determine and implement necessary preventativemaintenance.
  • Estimate material requirements and pricing to accomplish theabove duties as well as submit recommendations to supervisorconcerning maintenance and replacement of equipment.
  • Conduct all work in accordance with current building codes andsafety procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawingspecifications and operating instructions.
  • Ability to work with others and carry out tasks without directsupervision.
  • Ability to adjust to changes in assigned tasks.
  • Willingness to respond to emergency after-hours needs.
  • Keep Journeyman or Master plumbing license current includingattending required training in areas of responsibility.
Qualifications
  • Must hold a current Michigan Journeyman or Master PlumberLicense. High school graduate with at least 3-5 years of experiencein the trade preferably in a maintenance environment. Idealcandidate will have a plumbing backflow prevention testingcertificate or be willing to obtain certification.
  • Must have a valid Michigan driver’s license. Must pass aphysical examination and possess no physical limitations whichwould inhibit work performance.
  • Computer skills adequate to respond to work orders, work withsuppliers and communicate with others on campus.
  • Ability to plan and organize work based on work orders andpreventative maintenance requirements.
  • Must have a personality capable of handling stressful deadlinesituations and dealing diplomatically with people.
Physical Demands

This position requires remaining in a sitting or position forfrequent periods of time; sometimes includes crouching, bending,and having to work in confined spaces or on ladders. This positionoften works in non-climate controlled spaces. Occasionally involvesmoving and lifting items over 25 pounds; frequently will movebetween different offices/workspaces/buildings; and requireseffective communication abilities. In the case of temporary orpermanent condition(s) that require(s) accommodation(s), reasonableaccommodation(s) may be requested.
