Multnomah County’s Public Health Division is a vital resource for residents, working to promote physical and mental health, prevent disease and injury, and ensure access to essential health services. Some of our key functions and services include: preventing and controlling diseases, supporting maternal and child health, addressing mental health and substance use, ensuring environmental health, and promoting health equity.

The Prevention and Health Promotion (PHP) unit within the Public Health division works to improve community well-being through four core programs that focus on chronic disease prevention, tobacco control, adolescent health, and reducing health disparities among specific populations. These initiatives utilize strategies such as community engagement, policy advancement, and direct support to foster safe, healthy, and equitable environments for all residents.

The PHP Immunization & Community Health Intern acts as the operational backbone of the population health team, helping to fulfill state immunization reporting requirements (ORS 433.235–433.284 and OAR 333-050-0140) while supporting community outreach, data management, and family education.

As the PHP Immunization & Community Health Intern, your work will include:

Community Engagement & Outreach
  • Coordinate low-barrier mobile immunization clinics in partnership with community organizations to serve high-need populations, while developing and distributing culturally tailored educational materials.
  • Educate the community on the importance of vaccines and manage essential communications to families regarding health, safety, and immunization requirements.
Communication Materials Development
  • Collaborate with staff and community members to develop and refine accessible resources that clarify immunization mandates and school exclusion regulations for families and educators.
School, Community & Program Support
  • Community Outreach: Organize vaccine fairs, share resources, and answer public inquiries.
  • School Immunization Support: Implement immunization programs to help families navigate exclusion laws, keeping students protected and in school.
  • Growth: Identify and share process improvements as the role evolves.
Policy, Systems & Logistics:
  • Compliance: Support the Vaccine Access Program (VAP) by monitoring temperature logs, updating tracking tools, and performing data entry/registry alignment (e.g., Oregon ALERT IIS).
  • Data Management: Ensure accurate data entry and record management to support public health decision-making and identify coverage gaps.
  • Research: Conduct literature reviews on vaccine hesitancy to propose policy and systems changes.
Program Sustainability & Strategic Planning Support:
  • Support long-term sustainability by refining SBEAR (Situation, Background, Equity, Assessment, Recommendation) planning documents.
  • Use data-driven insights to modernize workflows and reach under-vaccinated populations.Assist with compiling reporting data (e.g., PE 43 workplan, ALERT Reporting).
