Job summary

UPMC is seeking a Phlebotomist to perform accurate phlebotomy and specimen collection for inpatients and outpatients under supervision of Medical Technologists.

You will interact with lab customers, perform venipuncture, educate patients on collection procedures, transport specimens, and assist with clerical duties.

Applicants should have a high school diploma; certification is preferred; 6 months experience preferred; knowledge of medical terminology and LIS experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program preferred.
  • Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy preferred.
  • Medical terminology knowledge preferred.
  • Laboratory information system experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to inquiries by phone.
  • Procure blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick following proper patient identification procedures.
  • Transport specimens from collection areas to the laboratory following safety procedures.
  • Enter demographic information, test orders, and other data into the information system; manage checks and charges.
  • Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as applicable.
  • Inform staff and supervisors of unusual or problematic incidents.
  • May perform arterial puncture following guidelines.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies for duties and ensure cost-effective use of materials.
