Responsibilities

  • Perform blood collection procedures and venipuncture; maintain accurate log sheets.
  • Verify order requests and patient information prior to drawing blood.
  • Label specimens and deliver to the correct processing area.
  • Perform specimen processing and related tasks including accessioning, centrifugation and packaging.
  • Transport blood and other specimens as needed and deliver lab supplies.

Our Institute is expanding with a new one million square foot, 15 floor, state of the art facility on Main Campus to enhance care for complex conditions such as brain tumors, spine injuries, epileptic seizures, neuromuscular disorders and strokes. The building brings all stages of care under one roof with dedicated areas for outpatient services, surgery, stepdown, ICU and epilepsy monitoring, along with additional operating rooms and expanded ambulatory, infusion, imaging, EMG, sleep and brain study services. We are welcoming nearly 500 new caregivers to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and contribute to nationally recognized, innovative neurological care. As Phlebotomy Technician, you are an integral member of the Medical Laboratory Team. Many patients often find needles and the idea of having their blood drawn frightening. Using your experience and skills, you can help put the patient at ease while obtaining all the required specimens. While helping enhance the care experience, you can also explore the countless educational and professional development resources offered by Cleveland Clinic, including online courses, in-person trainings and more.

A caregiver in this position works 1st shift: Weekdays 3:00am--7:00am, Weekends 3:00am--11:30am.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Perform blood collection procedures, follow venipuncture procedures and maintain appropriate log sheets.
  • Verify order requests and identify information prior to drawing blood or collecting the specimen/kit.
  • Label all specimens collected and deliver them to the appropriate processing area.
  • Perform specimen processing and send out tasks, including accessioning, centrifugation and packaging.
  • Pick up and deliver blood, other sample types and lab supplies.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Technical proficiency with standard procedures, techniques and common practices
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a team environment

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Formal Phlebotomy Certification
  • Graduate of an accredited phlebotomy program with a clinical rotation/externship
  • One year of Phlebotomy experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires frequent and long durations of standing and walking.
  • Visual acuity including the ability to distinguish colors.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate blood drawing equipment and make measurements.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
