Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture according to policy.
  • Collect blood specimens for pediatric and adult patients.
  • Identify patients to ensure correct sample matching.
  • Follow infection control procedures and isolation protocols.
  • Enter specimen data into the LIS.
  • Operate instrumentation appropriate for phlebotomy tasks.
  • Provide compassionate, professional patient care.
  • Assist with onboarding and training of new staff.

Lancaster, PA (Lancaster General Hospital)

Hours and Shift

Full Time (32 hours/week) Evening Shift. Monday-Friday between 2:30 pm and 11 pm. Every other weekend (both Saturday & Sunday). Every other holiday. On call rotation.

Training

8 weeks of full-time training on Evening Shift.

Summary

Phlebotomists are vital in the production of clinical laboratory results. They are responsible for obtaining quality blood specimens, which play a crucial role in clinical decision-making. Phlebotomists must have knowledge of anatomy, blood collection techniques, proper infection control procedures, and strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities
  • In a hospital inpatient setting, perform venipuncture and capillary puncture blood collection according to laboratory policies, procedures, and regulatory standards in Intensive Care Units, Medical Nursing Units, Emergency Department, and Trauma Bay.
  • Provide timely and accurate collection of blood specimens for both pediatric and adult patients.
  • Maintain patient safety by accurately identifying patients and associating the collected sample with the patient.
  • Follow all proper organizational infection control procedures and isolation protocols, including Airborne, Droplet, and Contact Isolation.
  • Use technology such as computer applications to organize and facilitate efficient patient care.
  • Work continually within multidisciplinary teams, responding to code situations such as trauma, stroke, hemodynamic stability, and cardiac events.
  • Perform blood collection in environments of extreme stress and difficult emotional situations with proficiency.
  • Navigate and mitigate work within a hazardous environment utilizing critical thinking and situational awareness.
  • Carry out laboratory testing at the bedside with point of care testing devices, including performance, evaluation, and troubleshooting of quality control on bedside analyzers.
  • Provide compassionate care in a professional manner.
  • Facilitate onboarding of new staff.
  • Participate in activities for maintenance of CAP.
  • Serve as point person by assuming departmental roles pertaining to Safety, Charge, Materials Management.
  • For positions at Women and Babies Hospital (WBH), identify specimens, accurately match identification parameters, correctly label all specimen types, and reconcile identification concerns.
  • Process specimens within the specified laboratory area and perform clerical functions such as answering the phone, checking physician orders on requisitions, and document filing.
  • Enter specimen information and related data into the laboratory information system (LIS).
  • Identify and resolve problems within the area of expertise.
  • Operate instrumentation appropriate to the specified laboratory area.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification as a Phlebotomist.
  • Experience in a health care setting.
  • Customer care experience.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification.
