Job summary

Responsibilities

• Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; responds to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
• Following proper patient identification procedures, procures appropriate blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick.
• Instructs patients on collection procedures for specimens and may collect samples other than blood.
• Transports specimens from on- and off-site collection areas to the laboratory following safety procedures.
• Enter demographic information and test orders into information systems; ensure specimen identity and adequacy.
• Trains and orients new employees, students and residents as applicable.
• May perform arterial puncture following strict guidelines.
• Monitor and maintain supplies for laboratory functions; cost-effective use of materials.
